Comments Thread For: Margarito's Trainer: The Fight Changed in Round Four

Yeah. The fight changed in the 4th. It quickly got from very bad to worse for Margarito.
I used to have lots of respect for Garcia but now I find myself struggling to retain some of that respect. Everyone knows Margarito has heart and Garcia needn't underscore that point by abstaining from his duty to protect his fighter, putting Margarito's health at risk. Citing Gatti as justification for his not stopping the fight can't cut it. Many of Gatti's fights were stopped due to injuries and conditions that pale in comparison to what Margarito got by the 9th round.
As a former fighter (a champ, no less) and a trainer who handles world champs and highly-rated contenders, Garcia is expected to know that the medical world has submitted countless times the opinion that frequent and multiple blows to the head are often more damaging than a solitary knock-out punch or a ko by way of two- or three- punch combinations, similar to what Mosley did to Margarito.
Perhaps, Garcia does not give too much premium on the opinions of doctors. If so, the fighters in his training stable may consider some changes.
Given all the trash talk, prefight, this is an odd thing to say, post-fight, but it needs to be said: "Pacquiao showed more concern for Margarito's welfare than the ref and Margarito's corner, combined."
Lawrence Cole has a long history of ineptitude and whenever he becomes part of a boxing event, lots of people expect another installment in his series. He seems to find ways to live up (er, down?) to his reputation. But, Garcia...This is his first that I know of. I'm willing to give him a pass, for whatever that pass is worth.Last edited by grayfist; 11-16-2010, 09:22 PM.

for the health and well-care of the fighter, the corner should've stopped that fight. At a given point it was pointless to continue. All that **** about being a warrior and all will go out the window when the dude is old and none of these fools will take care of a vegetable

In that situation, Pacquiao's camp was the one who save Margarito from sustaining further damage.
Personally, this macho image is ****** because it could have ended Margarito's career, which that maybe the case. Although I've heard it is not. Your fighter's future lies on your hand, the ref., or your opponents camp, but most of all, from the doctor monitoring the fighters health condition. Making the wrong choice could have an irreparable consequences. Please, be responsible.
Garcia was not willing to do the right thing in fear that it would stain his macho insanity.
And that is why Roach is so brilliant as a trainer as well as man. He lives with injuries he most probably sutained as the result of a tough and gutsy ring career. That kid could punch and often took too many shots in return. The Chacon fight is a classic.
Freddy has no problem stopping a fight. That is called professionalism and humane compassion. Margarito will never be the same after 11/13. And yet he will enter a prize ring again based on having received a brutal beating. Watching Fernando Vargas cheering on the disfigured Tony after the final bell made my skin crawl. Let's see how Vargas and Garcia feel should Tony develop the very symptoms he mocked Roach for exhibiting.

Margs was dumb to start head hunting in the beginning...even if Marg would have jabbed the arms while trying to go to the body it would have neutralized Pac's speed...He needed to throw double jabs if he didn't want to let that right hand release it's fury...he did the right thing by trying to treat Pac like an uppercut bag near the middle rounds...but it was Marg's mistake to head hunt knowing Pac has good head movement and that his body is a much bigger target and by jabbing at it he would have Pac at a distance...

it's a good thing that manny took the initiative of reducing the assult when he felt that tony was just already trying to survive. he knows that he could KO tony if he wanted to but he realized that tony does'nt deserve anymore beating. it's really a shame that cole and garcia failed to perform their job at a critical moment. tony could hardly see manny's punches on the first three rounds, how much more after the 4th round?
anyone noticed that manny's counter punching skills significantly improved on this fight? i think that was the main reason why tony was not able to execute their fight plan of pressuring manny. every time tony launches his punch, manny counters with the right hook followed by a combo.
i hope tony will be ok and be back on the ring....
