The fighters are Golden Boy's employees sort of speak, doing what they're told (and that's not right, but for the sake of this argument that's the unfortunate case). So HBO offered this amount to Golden Boy for the fight, Golden Boy turned around and paid less to the fighters and pocketed the difference. This is shady, but not illegal. So that's like a contractor being paid say $1000 by the customer, but paying only $100 to the employees who actually did the job.

What is illegal, however, is reporting that they paid them that amount when they didn't. The contractor can't file taxes claiming that they paid their employees the $1000.

Again, I could care less about the promoter's interests, I'm on the boxers' side 100%, I'm just trying to make sense of all this.

I guess my question now is, are the fighters legally entitled to the full amount that HBO offered for the fight, or does the promoter make the final decision of how much of that amount to actually give the fighters?
You raise a lot of great question here, For me it the deduction or monies offered to Campbell and ortiz is relatively small and too low considering what HBO paid GBP, It might not be illegal but it does stink bad for a promotion company which claim they represent the best interest of fighters and how they want to change the way promoters are talked about.

It'd be ironic and funny to see Ortiz go back to Top Rank after this debacle. I think GBP will pay the money that was scammed and plus then some to both boxers just to keep them jumping ship or suing.

Is this a normal thing in boxing?

Sucks to be Ortiz. Can't get any worst getting screwed behind your back without your knowledge. While with Top Rank, he was getting a bad deal but at least he knew about it.

It's funny hearing people say that "this is no big deal." It's no big deal because it's not "your" money.

If it was your money that people are f**king with, then you'd be screaming like a *****.

Only HBO knows how much it costs to put on the fights and secure the venue and what not. They tell the IRS or whoever is going to audit the books so to speak, that they paid the fighters a total of 700K when in reality they only paid the fighters 250K but the fighters only know they got paid what they were promised so they are kosher- and they aren't going to be none the wiser.

Once the auditing body finds out that the fighters got paid like a third of what GBP says they paid them, they screw over GBp because they lied and pocketed the extra 500K for some reason.
does that mean if this wasnt discovered whenever Ortiz and Campbell went to pay their tax bill, the IRS would be looking for tax on the whole 700k (between them) i.e. the fighters would've had to pay more tax money than they got for their purse?

edit- nevermind, was explained on the next page.
