He's my personal favorite middleweight that I've watched enough of (I haven't seen near as much SRR).

Monzon was the epitome of a 15 round fighter. He always finished stronger than his opponent. In a 15 round fight he'd be no worse than even money against anybody ever.

I couldn't vote. It's so close between him and Hagler for me. I have no problem with someone thinking he is the best MW ever though. It's funny because I was just watching old videos of Monzon before I read this thread. Dude was a beast for sure.

Monzon fought almost eclusivly fighters from ARGENTINA. Thats no different then Edison Miranda staying in colombia and beating up bums his whole career. He was very average and never beat anybody. Its amazing how somebody can retire for a few years and people forget that the guy never beat anybody, yet call themselves trashing modern fighters who never "beat anybody".

Monzon's best win was Emile Griffith who at the time of the fight had 13 loses. Monzon couldn't even beat a blown up ray leonard @ 160.

Monzon cleaned out the middleweight division and dominated it for years. Calling him "very average" totally exposes your ignorance. Do some research and you'll see he won title fights in Italy, France, and the US.

Fuck Hopkins jab and grab style. Mauling and making it a point to spoil fights doesn't make you an ATG...

              Seriously, fuck him.
That shows how little you must know about Hopkins or seen from him. He wasn't that bad to watch back in the day. he didn't always use the jab and grab style. Speed guys are his disadvantage losing to Taylor don't mean ****. It's proven fact Hopkins can't handle speed, but can handle everything else.

That's why I think Hopkins wins against Monzon and Hagler. I don't think he's the best Middleweight of all time, but his style is so damn hard to beat, he has the perfect gameplan in every fight to make you look bad. Unless you got great speed and can utilize the jab your ****ed. Sugar Ray would beat him tho.

the kid must have misread boxrec.

boxrec is an excellent source of information but it doesn't help if you don't know what names are good or not.

next time you look up boxrec check out the ring ratings too.

look at who monzon fought and compare it to who ring ****zine had ranked in those years.

it'll save you from making a fool out of yourself.

boxrec just list a person's opponents and stats. it don't help if you don't know who those people are.

2.) Used to be a chain smoker and a party guy yet still got so far in boxing and didnt lose focus

                    3.) Hadn't lost a fight from 1964 to 1977 till his retirement with a record of 87-3

4.) Was the undisputed middleweight champion for 7 years

5.) Defended his linear middleweight championship for 14 times.

6.) Had wins over Emile Griffith twice (Monzon was the second man to stop him), Nino Benvenuti, Rodrigo Valdez (Twice) to regain his wbc title for which he got stripped for not facing his mandatory.

Even Bernard Hopkins admitted out of the Middleweight ATG's he would lose to Carlos Monzon.

Carlos Monzon was a very active fighter and had a damn good jab, he knew how to use it properly. In the briscoe fight i think he average throwing 60 jabs per round

He was still an a$$hole though outside the ring, notorious for beating women.

"I'm the best middleweight since Monzon" - Hagler

So it's obvious his peers have a healthy amount of respect for him. In terms of accomplishements he is perhaps top 5 @ 160, let's not forget though boxing had some really good (and BIG) middleweights in the early 90's who i think could match it with any 160 pounder in history.

It doesn't really matter what hopkins has said in the past what matters is how boxing historians view each ones careers and it's up to us fans to speculate on how a monzon-hopkins clash might have been.

I am not hating on the due. I do think Monzon beats him tough. But, really nothing has changed from that interview from this one. Is not like he had a career defining victory after that interview where he said Monzon would win. Unless you count the Roy Jones victory a good victory.
The first quote was from 2007-2008 and the last quote was after the pavlik but before the jones fight. Maybe a difference in confidence in those two days, who knows. Again though I don't think it matters one bit what he says, hopkins always gives props to oldschool fighters even saying guys from the 1800's were tougher than guys today knowing damn well hopkins could beat any MW from that time era.
