I just said something very similar. I've been critical of Boots in the past for his resume and his dad's propensity for avoiding smoke on his behalf. But I also thought that seeking unifications was the right move, rather than being just another contender at 154. He's young, despite being 9 years in, and if he keeps taking real championship fights and ranked opponents, the doubts will get silenced over time.

I don't hold Boots accountable for the perhaps premature hype of the media and fans. I hold him accountable for what he says and what sort of fights he takes when good fights are available, because that's what he can control.

The line about him getting hit is pretty dumb, IMO. He demonstrated that he has defensive skills, and anyone who thinks differently can damn well get in the ring and try it for themselves. He's never even been wobbled from what I've seen, and he's been hit clean by guys who are good punchers and have real power. His current style means that if he doesn't feel that threatened, he'll happily take a few punches to try to get the finish, and frankly, fans should be HAPPY that he has that style. The same people who crap on him for taking shots are the same ones calling Shakur boring, saying that Rigo is just a runner, or claiming that Jamaine Ortiz ran vs Teo, despite stepping to him in the corner when Teo tried to wave him in, and outlanding him across the course of the fight. Boots has a fan friendly style, so it's frankly bizarre to complain about him getting hit. He gets hit considerably less than, say, Oscar Valdez, and the latter never gets that kind of criticism.

If he pulls an Andrade/Canelo and goes back to fighting low ranked guys while avoiding his mandatories or other champs, I'm going to be on his case. But he fought the guy I wanted him to, and dominated and finished him. Sure, he got hit. But Stanionis usually punches way more, and lands with around 10% better accuracy, so I don't get why people are whining about it. It's all very well to talk about punches you "shouldn't" get hit by, when you're not the one facing those punches.

As someone who's been a critic of Boots' resume and avoidance of smoke over the years, I say the author of this article got it **** on. He fought a better quality guy and performed great. What more needs be said?

Boots is meant for this, thats not my complaint. He might be able to beat all of them, but we wont see it. Barrios with his dust bin title is gold dust to Eddy. He pulled all of AJs titles out of Furys bin.

Boots is a massive talent and he does get hit. Right now he is fighting guys that he knows he is going to beat and not taking any risks by flirting with guys like Ortiz of this world. It was obvious in the ring on the weekend that he had no regard for what Stanionis had - power or skill. I have to admit that like most other observers I was critical of Boots after his second fight with Karen.

BUT what I find is that every time I try to put myself in the shoes of another person I change my opinion and suddenly understand why they do what they do. Boots is a talented professional athlete in the most brutal sport there is (along with MMA). His working life is relatively short so he needs to make as much money as possible as quickly as possible because he will be retired for a very long time.

So what is he doing? Now that he has risen to some form of prominence and is making a million or two for every fight he is simply building a retirement nest egg for his family before he walks into the casino and " rolls the dice and puts in all on black" by fighting Ortiz, Murtazaliev, Bohachuk etc. Every single poster on this site who has a family to support would do the exact same same thing, regardless of any type of "warrior mentality" or "wanting to prove that you are the best.

I believe that Boots will start challenging himself and let it all hang out once he has secured his family's future. My guess is we have another couple of "meh" fights before we all get what we want.

          Great article.

Much of the criticism of Boots comes from high-expectations, but a lot of it comes from racists, who just shxt on every Black fighter, especially the good ones.

They hate Floyd, Devin, Shakur, Tank, & a lot of them hate on Bud, too.

I'd love to see Boots prove himself to be a massive talent. That would mean he has to take risks. It seems like everybody desperately wants him to be a generational talent. Does anybody disagree that he has some work to put in? He has one of the hottest weight classes right above him. I think he's happy not facing guys that could potentially beat him.

Yes, he has to put some work in at 154 once he is comfortable to tackle that. Until then, he is not a generational talent.

Thats’s fair. The problem is, people are now clamoring for a downfall because Boots is supposed to be like Floyd I.e he should never get hit. And he should be at Crawford’s level resume-wise, even though he’s only 27 and this is his FIRST weight class.

Boots is the same age as Shakur and both get shït on. Meanwhile, Tank is 30 and is ducking the one guy in his weight class.

Boots is EXACTLY where Crawford was when Crawford was 27 years old.

EVERYONE can see that. All the big fights are at 154. No one wants to see him fight barrios or Norman. No one will pay to watch those fights like no one payed to watch the Stan fight.
