I have no dog in the fight. Let's get it over with. Win or lose I'd like to see Morrel with others like Mbili, Gvozdyz. See if he'd do well with Gvozdyk in particular, that same fighter that showed up in the Bena fight. I don't think so. How about Gvozdyk vs Kalajdzic so we can compare.

Back and forth in the 1st half, then Benavidez takes over in the 2nd half and overwhelms Morrell.

I think Benavidez is going to get knocked down a couple times and lose a close decision. He's got some big bad habits that haven't really come to bite him yet, but will come to light much more obviously vs someone his own size who's big and strong.
Bad habit number 1 is that he likes to default to a static high guard, and Morrell actually loves to take advantage of that mistake, and throws big punches in combination.
Bad habit number 2 is that he advances rear foot first and often squares up, leaving him in a compromised stance relative to his opponent. A powerful puncher who times it right can more easily score a flash KD on an opponent in a squared stance.
Both fighters are good at targeting the body, which may lead to them struggling more than usual from an endurance perspective in later rounds.
Morrell has a slight reach advantage, and will be the first person Benavidez has faced for whom that's true. A lot of Benavidez' success IMO has come from taking advantage of being bigger than his opponents, and I suspect that, like Devin Haney, he will find the holes in his game the hard way facing the first opponent who's actually his size, aside from Gvozdyk.CubanGuyNYC likes this.
