Without a doubt he's the worst four division champion ever. He's fought a lot of guys but he's also lost to almost ALL of them. He's the undisputed champion of getting on people's nerves though although Amir Khan and Ryan Garcia give him a good run for his money in that department.
At his prime, I wouldn't say he is a bad world champion at all, impressive handspeed, granite chin and all around good skill. Qualities of a top fighter.
but honestly out of the (23) four division champions, he had the easiest run.
At super featherweight he got the WBO title against Argentina's non ranked contender Vicente Martin Rodriguez.
At lightweight he got the WBA belt against top contender Khabib Allakhverdiev who didn't get a marquee win and was coming off a loss to Jesse Vargas with a year of inactivity.
At welterweight to get the WBA belt he fought against Paulie Malaignaggi winning by split decision.
His best win to get the WBC lightweight title was against Antonio DeMarco (28-2, 20 KOs) who was champ at lightweight for a year and beat a prime Jorge Linares by late KO.
The other two who are not that behind is Leo Santa Cruz and the recent champ Kosei Tanaka.
I mean he fought for two vacant titles at 130 & 140 and the weakest champion at 147 at the time who was Paulie and he got a decision that could of gone either and Antonio Demarco at 135 who was his best win imo and a good fighter but again not someone who was a dominant champion. So yeah he got the right fights against the right guys for his title wins and when he stepped up against top tier guys he's lost everytime. Broner had potential but he just never lived up to it and when he's had big fights hes opted to not let his hands go in most of them and kinda go into survival mode.
AB had skills once upon a time but you pay the price for not having the discipline. Was he the beneficiary of being tied to a big promoter who got him opportunity he didn’t deserve? Absolutely. Do I think it played a part in it cutting his career short? Hell yeah. He didn’t have to grind his way up and again, it makes fighters like him feel like a two week camp is enough. Then you get matched with people a level above that eventually while still doing the same shhh you did against the d and C fighters you were fed.
I think Duke McKenzie is a 4 division champion so I would say Broner is the second worst 4 division champion. Also both will be guys that have to wait a long time for induction to Canastota. I would even say McKenzie will never get inducted but Broner has a chance because the IBHOF has a very low bar for induction.
