This has been done to death. Hatton just didn't have to cut weight for the scales all the way down to 140. He didn't weigh over 149 for his WW fight with Floyd. He basically just showed up at his normal JrWW fight-time weight which is close to 150...something that was a made sure of after seeing what happened in the Collazo fight when he showed up at 158. Get over it.

Cotto vs. Pac should do really well. Cotto has a Huge following and Puerto-Ricans love a good fighter from their Island.
With Pac's name as the opponent, it should do 1+ million.
Cotto could fight Floyd as well and they would do 1+ million as well.
hatton vs. mayweather at 140 or 147 would make no difference. just like pacquiao vs. hatton would make no difference for ricky at 140 or 147 as well.

hatton is just not talented enough to beat floyd and punchers like pacquiao always kill pressure fighters like ricky.

cotto and pac should do well. the puerto ricans and filipino-americans will buy in large numbers. mexican fans either like/dislike cotto and like/dislike pacquiao so they'll be interested.

no way does this fight not do good ppv buys , whether it'll do great ppv buys will depend on the mainstream. the mainstream , casual boxing fans are the ones that blow up the buyrate. hardcore boxing fans usually only account for about 400-500k ppv buys. as can be seen with fights like marquez-pacquiao or cotto-margarito.

If he can go on shows like Letterman like you said it would make him bigger than he is right now IMO, When he came over to England for the hatton fight most of the press could ask him much because he cant really full express himself the way he would have liked.
      Agree; air-time is important.

The Cookie Monster doesn't speak English well yet he is very well known.

Arnold Schwarzenegger had a thick accent and still does and he became very popular. He knew how to market himself.

Same with Jackie Chan and Jet Li

I would use Bruce Lee but he was American

        Agree

I know many people that are already hyped for the Pac vs. Cotto fight so I'm expecting big numbers.
        24/7 should help.

Just imagine if 24/7 was on ESPN though and ESPN was running the PPV show. I think it would be even bigger for fighters.
If ESPN could afford big names to fight on their channel it would be huge for boxing.

And then I'm sure we can include the Gay crowd.

Appearing with celebs helps as well.

And of course the way he fought and who he fought.
oscar was just born to be a star.

you got the olympic gold medal.

the story about his mom and dedicating the gold medal for her.

that's it. he was mainstream from the start.

and of course the girls thinking he's cute didn't hurt.

the guy had tv commercials for chevy and stuff before his 1st pro fight. lucky bastard.

the death of olympic boxing is what took our sport out of the mainstream imo.

hbo needs to work something out with espn.

like how showtime airs its old fights on espn classic.

i don't understand why 24/7 and the old fights hbo shows of the upcoming fighters can't be put on espn.

air it on hbo first but a week before the fight give it to espn to run.

Tell that to some Euros or a particular Canadian that wishes he was a Euro...who claim Olympic boxing is alive and thriving the way it is.

I think it stinks. Not the fighters but the way it is setup with how it is scored and how fighters are forced to fight with that pitty-pat crap to score points.

I say let them be scored like back in the day where you had to win the round. Body shots will now count and trying to knock someone out is back in play.

              This was Olympic Boxing:

Like a 3 round Pro fight.

they need to go back to the old rules.

that button pushing for each punch nonsense killed olympic boxing.

it's not exciting and that's why american tv stopped showing fights.

they barely even show highlights of it now.

It also effects how they fight when they turn Pro. They have to readjust to the Pro fighting style instead of already have the basics down. The one thing I was afraid of was if one day they just refuse to fight like Pros should fight and start pitt-pat fighting as Pros.

                  Kevin Rooney quotes:

                  Rooney:
We’re not getting any publicity anymore. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it you, what’s wrong right now is that ABC, CBS and NBC don’t show any fights anymore. Now, I don’t know how long you’ve been in the fight game, how long you’ve been interested in it, or how old you are, but back in the 60’s, 70’s and then in the middle 80’s, you would see a fight on t.v. on the weekend. People would sit down, sit on their couch, have a beer and wanna watch a fight. You don’t see that no more. Everything is Pay Per View. They want you to pay $50 to see a couple of mediocre guys. When Tyson was on there or Rid**** Bowe, or Hopkins and Taylor-----but now, everything’s so spread out. ESPN does their Friday night shows but they do half a year and then they take off. What I’m saying, what is missing and hurting the boxing industry is that ABC, CBS, and NBC do not show ‘live’ fights anymore. On the weekends, Saturday afternoon. 1 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 5 o’clock, 7 o’clock we’re gonna be showing a ‘live’ from Philadelphia, from New York, from Atlantic City, from Nevada. So and so is fighting so and so for a title or title elimination, and this is what is hurting the game. Everyone went to Pay Per View. Were gonna have a Big Fight. You can buy it for $50. And then the logical fan says wait a minute! Why do I want to pay $50 to see these 2 guys fight? I’m watching it on HBO the next day!
Q – What happened to Boxing?

Rooney– Well o.k. what the Heavyweight Division doesn’t have is a Rocky Marciano, a Joe Frazier, a Muhammad Ali, and a Mike Tyson. All those guys I just mentioned they were gonna put a hurtin’ on you. They’d just go in and they were gentlemen about it. Alright. I knocked you out. Sorry, but that’s just the breaks. (Laughs). That’s what the public wants to see. You got these European fighters now, but, they’re from a different school. It’s like tap, tap, don’t hurt me. I won’t hurt you. If you can out point me, good for you. Where, back in 1976, up in Montreal when Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Heerns and the other little kid who was a 112 pounds, I forgot his name. They went out there and won 5 Gold medals. They were ripping ass. Ever since then, in my opinion, we’ve been catering to European nations. This is the way we’re gonna fight. No-----this is America! American people are like-----let’s mix it up. I’m gonna knock you out or you’re gonna knock me out-----either way, that’s what the people want to see. They don’t want to see this tap, tap and the referee jump in and break, break and give ‘em all those hand signals. The Fight Game has gone south as far as I’m concerned. For that reason we’re being guided by the Europeans, their ways and rules. What do you mean? This is the United States of America. We do what we want to do. Somewhere it got mixed up. You know, it all comes down to money. Some Big Shot here in the U.S.A. -----There’s been so many scandals in the Amateurs for the last 10-15 years, people got fired ‘cause they were stealing money out there in Colorado. That’s a problem. Get rid of everybody. Let’s just go back to the basics.
