alot of people see him as the best P4P ever and also the best ever period but looking over his record i dont see why he is so great and regarded. the only people i know on his record is jake lamotta and joey maxim.. is it that fact we ha had 173 win swith 19 loses? if so what about people who have more fights then him rated higher? enlighten me plz

The guy probably beat the best opposition ever, Never lost a fight in his prime.(all of his losses were after his returns)He was an excellent fighter. He had a superb combination of speed, skill and power. I mean I can continue for hours but just get some of his fights(when he was in his prime, especially at welter) and you will understand. He rightfully deserves the title of the best P#P ever.

I think another reason he's considered so great is that he came back years after his first retirement, and still kicked some ass. He lost fights, too, but I'm fairly certain he regained his belt(s).

If you have to ask you are probably not as big a boxing fan as you think you are.

SRR is the greatest ever, period. He lost his first fight to Jake LaMotta after winning his first 40 professional fights! Oh, and did you know that LaMotta outweighed Robinson by 15 pounds in the official weigh-in? They fought at Middleweight (160 pounds) and Ray weighed about 145 pounds for that fight. He came back and beat the living crap out of LaMotta the next three times they met in the ring. Jake is quoted as saying that nobody ever beat him the way Ray Robinson did.

After the LaMotta loss, Robinson came and was unbeaten in his next 91 professional fights (89 wins, 1 draw, and 1 NC). That, in itself, is impressive. So, at one point, Ray was 129-1-1 with 1 NC. Also, Ray fought his first 100 o so fights at Middleweight without ever weighing more than 147 pounds! He was at a huge disadvantage and yet managed to beat almost everyone they put in front of him. His loss to LaMotta was on account of the flu (he was very sick but needed the money to pay for his bills so he decided to fight). Just look at what Gatti did to Gamache because he weighed 15 pounds more than he did on fight night and think of what Robinson went through in over 100 matches.

The guy was extremely quick and packed a big punch with both hands. His KO reccord was amazing: 131 fights (before his second loss) and 87 of those ending early. If you ever watch some of his early fights, it's a beauty to watch him in the ring. He was more gracefull and moved better (and quicker) than Ali ever thought he could. Actually, Ali modled himself after Robinson.

Sorry for the rant, but I don't like people disrespecting the greatest fighter ever!

Good post, PRBoxingfan. You said just about everything there is to say about this. One thing is that I don't think a lot of people really understand SRR's greatness because he was rarely caught on film during his prime, one-punch knockout days. He was amazing on the clips we do have of him, and most of those were taken well after his primetime years.

Reminds me of Miguel Cotto vs. "Chop Chop" Corley.
