Can't say I'm surprised. I never believed in Donaire's resurgence/ newfound hype after he beat Oubaali for the title and made "history".
A) The frenchman wasn't a proven champion. He won a vacant title againt Raush'ee and made a couple defenses against limited opposition.
B) Oubaali had been struggling to make ends meet during Covid and was seriously considering retirement to get a regular job to provide for his family.
C) He was coming off a very long period of inactivity.
D) Training camp. Difficult to get a proper training camp with a nutritionist, s&c coach etc. and quality sparring partners for the required time when you're not being backed financially.
E) He had no visa up until two or three weeks before the fight. He had to publicly ask France President to help him get one.
What I saw that day was an elite pro boxer give a reality check to a good part-time or semi-pro boxer. Oubaali took notes and retired right after the fight.
Donaire got his own reality check today.

Donaire will look back at this and realize that he made a very costly strategic mistake. He probably wasn't going to beat Inoue no matter how he fought, but you just don't come out hard, press and punch with a puncher. You don't do that in Rd 1 anyway. It goes without saying that Donaire should have opened up boxing and tried to soften Inoue up a bit before engaing head on, but he just came into the fight with a lot of self-belief. Nonito overestimated his own power and chin and Monster just ate him up.Damn Wicked Castilo like this.
