He won't have any fans left if he does that, and no one would pay to see him. Maidana is a very limited fighter with a big punch. He's a good gatekeeper, nothing more. Beating him will allow Khan to lay to rest the gremlins about his chin. If he's not ready to beat him after the Salita fight, he never will be. If he can't beat a fighter as limited as Maidana, he'll never be a top level fighter and for someone to call themselves a world champion but then give up a belt rather than face anyone who can fight, he'd lose all credibility, and his career as a contender that anyone takes seriously would be over.
In any case, though, there's a good chance that Maidana will lose to whoever he fights in November and Khan's mandatory will be someone else.
This is one of the best post i have seen on this subject.

Khan always looks too tense and his body looks rigid in his fights, if he loosened up a bit i think he would be much better off. But because of this he always looks nervous or up tight like he's not comfortable. In my eyes it makes him easier to hit because he stands straight up and barely moves, not much headmovement, which is why i don't fancy his chances against Maidana. Despite Maidana being a terrible boxer i don't think he would have trouble hitting Khan.

I've seen Maidana in only the Ortiz fight, so i shouldn't have judgment on him yet, but i've seen enough on Khan to know how much he has improved under Roach.
All i know is that as limited as Maidana may be, he is very good at pressure and looks to come forward no matter what offence is coming his way. Heavy handed too, and connecting with Khan could spell an end. He would have to connect though. Khan's movement is a lot better, but i think the Salita's fight will give better answers at where Khan goes next.
Like another poster stated, high risk/low reward. Losing another fight would backpeddle Khan so far that it would take major gains to be respected at World level. Maidana is not world class. Khan at this point would lose to the likes of Bradley etc..., but Maidana is a winnable fight. I think it would be better judgement after both mens next fights though on an outcome prediction.

The best at 140??? Based on beating ortiz??? Two fights ago nobody knew who he was, Have seen two of his fight (1) against kotelnik- a fight that i thought Maidana won in Germany (2) against Ortiz - a fight i thought he showed a lot of heart to comeback and KO Ortiz.
But to label him the best at 140 based on two fight is a bit prematured, He does hit hard but how are we sure he is the hardest hitter at 140??
Love to see Maidana again before i label him the best thing at 140 because in the Kotelnik fight he was getting frustrated when he couldnt get through Kotelnik's defence.

As you saw with the Ortiz fight, we never saw him experience that before and he folded right around the dotted lines(not to say that is gonna happen with Khan but the way they have brought him up in the sport and matching him with soft punches just makes you wonder)

Khan has a good chance of beating Maidana if they face each other. His defence is much improved, and considering Ortiz's speed have Maidana problems, Khan's speed will give him nightmares. Plus Maidana has a poor chin, so Khan can definitely give him a lot to think about.
This a pick em fight, and one that I think will end up with a KO either way. Maidana can't outbox Khan, and Khan stop Maidana. The only way for Maidana to win is to catch Khan's chin. But that will be hard considering Khan's new defensive style, and his improved punch resistance at 140. Although, I still don't think he could handle a big, clean, power shot from Maidana.
