Does Anyone Honestly Believe that Pacquiao Can Beat Cotto?

I hate to drizzle all over the Manny Pacquiao sycophants, but I honestly don’t think Pacquiao belongs in the same ring with a fighter like Miguel Cotto, and I’m really hoping that Pacquiao goes ahead and chooses Cotto as an alternative to waiting around and fighting the winner of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez bout on July 18th.

Pacquiao’s own promoter Bob Arum said recently that he’d like to have Pacquiao fight either Cotto or Edwin Valero next in a large stadium that can fit 100,000. Besides the obvious question of where and how would Pacquiao be able sell out such a large stadium, how would Pacquiao even compete with a talented welterweight like Cotto.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Pacquiao is good against certain hand-picked opponents, like the 36-year-old Oscar De La Hoya and the tired Ricky Hatton, but against a real top welterweight like Cotto, you can forget it. Pacquiao will lose and lose badly.

Freddie Roach can set up any kind of bizarre weight requirements that he wants for Cotto to come in at, it won’t change a thing in this fight. Cotto will go, start pounding Pacquiao in the body, and quickly take him out in the first few rounds.

I don’t know if Arum is serious about wanting Pacquiao to fight Cotto or not, because he may be just using him as a way to ensure that Mayweather doesn’t ask for too big of a slice of the revenue pie. But if Arum is serious, it will be a huge mistake for him because Cotto will wipe the deck with Pacquiao, and I’m not the only that thinks this. If you ask 1000 unbiased boxing fans, I bet you’ll find the vast majority of them picking Cotto to knock Pacquiao.

I think Pacquiao is a great little fighter, but he’s benefited from some easy opponents in the past four years and hasn’t changed much as a fighter from the one that was easily defeated by Erik Morales in 2005. How anyone can think that a fighter like Pacquiao who was soundly beaten by an in shape, semi prime Morales in 2005 can beat a fighter like Cotto is beyond me.

Cotto is bigger, stronger, and the much better boxer than Pacquiao. Cotto can do it all – fight from the outside or inside, whereas Pacquiao is just a hit and run type fighter.

In the end, I think Pacquiao won’t want to fight Cotto, because he probably knows how dangerous Miguel is and what he would have in store for him if he chose to fight him. I wish Pacquiao’s fans weren’t so enthusiastic about wanting him to fight all these talented opponents like Cotto, because they’re really not helping Pacquiao.

What they need to do is find easy fights for him so that he can continue with what he’s been doing. Maybe lure Ricky Hatton into a rematch or maybe David Diaz - that would be really helping Pacquiao, but not by encouraging him to fight a dangerous puncher like Cotto.

i cosign this article 100%. pacquiao is amazing. but cotto is just too much for him to handle.

    Did not read.

Pacquiao is an ELITE 140 pounder.

Cotto is an ELITE 147 pounder.

Their meeting would involve fireworks for sure. Obviously the advantage is to Cotto as he is the bigger man. They are both elite level fighters at around the same weight though so Cotto knocking Pac out in a few rounds is beyond a joke.

If made at 143lb catch-weight it be an interesting fight. To say Pac-Man doesn't belong in the same ring w/ Cotto is ******ED!

Ive said in ther past before pac fought barrera, morales, hatton and delahoya that he was out of his depth! I have now decided to reserve judgement on this amazing little fighter cos he's made a believer out of me

Pac will be an underdog, but a very live one. After proving me wrong vs. oscar/hatton i won't put anything past pac anymore.

Its more like Cotto don't belong in the same league as PAC. I mean, it wasn't that long ago that he not only got beat, but he flat out submitted to a guy who moves like a f**kin' turtle! Shane made that sh8t look like an 8th grader beating up on a 1st grader.

P4P - It's an insult to PAC to include Cotto's name in the same sentence, please.

We already got a view on how Cotto dealt with a fast lefty, via low blows.

Why not? Southpaws are always tricky to fight.
If Manny lands a straight left early he has a chance.

Chop Chop did and had Cotto all wobbly.

Cotto is a great body puncher so he could very much discourage Pac but anything can happen with a left hand coming from a weird angle flush on the chin.

I would pick cotto to win if I really had to pick a winner in this matchup but pacquiao winning isn't out of the question. whether its a decision or a ko win for pac, I wouldn't at all be shocked or surprised. after all, Cotto is the same height as JMM and I think that JMM is the better and faster counter puncher(which is the style needed to beat pac) and JMM is probably the best combination counter puncher that there is.

either way, this fight would surely be entertaining as ***.

Cotto likes to fight at a slow pace, and PAC fights at a dizzying one. P4P - I really think PAC via late round ko.

Cotto had tremendous difficulty against a slow slug with a high-workrate in Margarita, what more with a hurricane like PAC.
