    Is Miguel Cotto Great? Why?

    hello people..

the goal of this thread is to start a discussion on miguel cotto and to see whether he is a great fighter or not.. when i mean great, i mean elite, hof status.. we can discuss his accomplishments and if he has done enough to be considered a great fighter, or if he has the potential to become one if he isn't one in your eyes already..

i understand there are many cotto nuthuggers and many cotto bashers but lets please keep the discussion civil.. please don't hate on someone if they make a strong argument and make valid points..

i'll start off.. No i do not think miguel cotto is a great fighter.. I do think he is a very good fighter and has potential to be a great fighter but as of right now he is not a great fighter in my opinion.. I actually think he is overrated.. He has good qualities and has made strides of improvement over the years as a boxer, but he still has a ways to go.. He has won a vacant belt at 140, and a vacant belt at 147, and actually has another chance to win a vacant belt at 147, which is impressive.. I would be more impressed if he beat someone for their belt.. that's my input, i could much further more into detail but i don't want to go on forever.. ok people what do you think?

I don't really care about the vacant belt thing. You can beat great fighters for vacant belts, and not-so-great fighters for legit titles. It's more about who you beat.

The exception is if it is the undisputed title, which is worth a lot more than just one strap. Beating the undisputed champion is worth a lot more than beating a reigning title holder, and winning the belt vacant is only worth a little bit less than that IMO.

I think his resume is very solid. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the future, but right now I don't think he has reached the level of greatness. How he comes back from defeat and what he does in the future will determine that.

I don't consider him to be overrated. I think he's very talented, and I think he will be considered great by most people in a few years time.

First, if you mean great, like ATG he is far from it. But if you say great as off right now, of course he is. He is not overrated, nobody said he was overrated, prior to the Margarito loss. He loss because styles makes fights and Margaritos styles happends to be the one who is the worst for Cotto. As far as skills nobody overrates him either, he have good boxing skills that he have shown in his fights, thats a fact. Out of all the WWs he is the more complete and overall best fighter. He is not prefect at anything but, he is good at everything, thats what makes him very special.

Fighting for Vacant belts or not means ****. Is the quality of opposition that matters. In the first 2 fights he had for a title, he had very good opponents. First he had at 140 previously undefeted Pinto who happends to had beaten Cotto as a amateur, and then at 147 he had Quintana, Who school Joel Julio and Williams. Now this time around is BS that he is fighting a guy like Jennings for a title, thats a joke, even ill admit that.

In overall cotto could be a ATG fighter, but as of now, he is not. Time will tell!!!!!!!

He ain't been around long enuf to be great yet. I think he'll lose again to Marg, but he's young enuf and talented enuf to win a lotta big fights and belts in the future.

he has the potential to be an ATG, but fights like jennings arent going to get him there, a rematch with margarito would help. Cotto's been a good solid fighter and has fought a better class of opponent on the way up than most of the prospects we have over here in the UK, Hattons resume until tszyu leaves something to be desired. I hope Cotto does come back strongly and has a great career, boxing needs fighters like him

The potential is there for him to be remembered as a great fighter but that's what it is right now, potential, these things are best discussed when a fighter is retired, Cotto seems like he still has quite a bit of time in the sport although we'll see if the Margarito fight has permanently affected him in about a month.

Its to early to ask this question. We don't know how he will preform after a bad loss.
