Hatton kept illegally holding and Mayweather kept using his elbows and forearms illegally to keep him from doing so. Money also uses that tactic for head control when in-fighting. Some times he'll lift the guys chin or move his head into a punching position.

He definitely uses the elbows to create distance for his punches on the inside, but not really for any damage they do in and of themselves. It's at least partially a byproduct of his Philly shell guard, but there's no doubt it's an intentional tactic.

Alot of fighters have their dirty tricks here and there.
Mayweather's dirty trick is the use of his elbows.
If he can get away with using it then why not....

I am a big Floyd fan but I have always thought he used his elbows in manners that are technically not legal.
It's very similar to a push off but with the advantages of keeping your profile low and keeping the shell defense maintained. If you look at as a push off (which is what it is) it is very similar to what Lennox Lewis did to Mike Tyson, actually taking two hands and shoving him back to create space and to avoid holding.
