You can watch the excellent documentary "Bright Lights, Dark Shadows" on Ray Robinson for his exact quote on it.

The interviewer commented that Ray seemed to enjoy his work, and Ray responded "No, I never enjoyed boxing. It's all a business to me". Ray's sister touched on it some more, saying he did it all for the money, to get their family out of poverty, etc...

Another ATG who said he didn't enjoy the sport was Michael Spinks. He wasn't even boxing after he won a medal in Montreal, but was fired from his custodial job when he fell asleep in the bathroom that he was supposed to clean.

He went back to boxing, became a great, and made millions.

Sugar Ray Robinson was perhaps the original businessman/boxer, he didn't like boxing, he just did it for the money and he was notoriously hard to deal with at the negotiating table because of his demands.

I'm sure he enjoyed it in some ways even if he said he didn't.

Robinson may have been the most driven champion ever, I don't think someone who only fought for money could've done what he did in boxing.

Now that doesn't necessarily mean that he ever liked the sport of boxing but rather what he got out of it, not only the money but the fame and the recognition of being a champion.

It may be that he lost a lot of his enthusiasm for the sport after the accidental death of Jimmy Doyle.

Look up him vs sammy angott george cliff tony freddie valentine andy nonnels and tony ancona Dykes, same obsolete tech and flaws as the older one that fought gene/jake/joey and others

Ray and this era look to be very overextending a lot of times to the body and are very hesitant in most movements. They don't fight from range much, they leave themselves open a lot of times, and a lot of times they will just throw to the body and not protect themselves. The Carlos era were able to protect the body with 1 hand while punching to the body. along with all the other advances in movement, along with being way smoother in movements the ray era They use mostly counters when up close. The lateral movement is very basic. They don't seem to be able to punch from range while doing it smoothly. They have to stop then punch most of the time. Their feet are mostly tiptoeing.
