People can say what they want about Kessler and Lacy but the fact was they were both undefeated champions perceived to be very dangerous at the time Joe faced them. The same could have been said about Pavlik. If Calzaghe thinks those wins were rubbished afterwards, what does he think will happen if he defeats old Jones? Why don't we ask Joe?
Shalom Chaver You're correct in what you say. And I think that Kessler was by far the more dangerous, and was on equal terms with Calzaghe until about the 6th rd. or later. He was also the WBC and WBA Champ which he'd won honestly,. and NO SLOUCH. better by a long way than anyone Hopkins had ever fought, excepting Roy Jones who was just about better than everybody.

You're penalizing a guy who, because in your opinion he can't punch, is N.G. Although you admit that he can hit his opponent, more and quiicker than anyone else. What would he be if he was able to punch hard that way, a world beater...that's what....AND .....that's what he was....IS. A World beater. Unbeaten after 46 fights.

      And his slaps must have SOMETHING on them,since Hopkins nearly "passed out" from one very light slap, {Admittedly Hopkins was acting, and hadn't been hutrt at all, but was being worn down by Calzaghe and grabbed the chance to get a breather, and MAYBE a point too}

Not to forget the 32 or more KO's he has, most of course byTKO, but they show the inevitability of what would have happened if the fights had continued.

GET SMART; have common sense, if costs nothing, only clean ears and a closed mouth.

Yeah, I didn't score the fight but I thought Calzaghe won what Larry Merchant calls, "the drama of the fight."

Calzaghe broke Hopkins. In fact, that's as weak as I've seen Hopkins look in a fight in...I don't remember. Does age have something to do with it? Absolutely. But did Calzaghe win the fight? I believe so.

I'm watching it again tonight since I finally got the DVD and maybe I'll score it this time. But one thing I will say is that Hopkins did for Jones what Taylor did for Hopkins the second time against Pavlik. He exposed some cracks in Calzaghe's armor that only a brilliant fighter could. His strategy was perfect. He just could not match Calzaghe's workrate and ultimately wilted. Jones will attempt to implement the exact same strategy but he and Hopkins aren't the exact same fighter. Each has their positives and negatives. Both may be too old to handle that whirlwind. Jones will look to counter the misses as well but make his a little "prettier," a little cleaner than Hopkins' was. And maybe more power.

The flip side is that Jones is no longer the great defensive fighter of the past and he will eat shots. Hopkins ate a couple himself. But he could take it. Not sure about Roy.

Here is what he had to say [details]
Joe shouldnt talk until he steps in the ring with another fighter, Hopkins outskilled Pavlik but can Joe do the same? I think he would have a bit of a harder time since he isnt as elusive/holding as Hopkins. Still would have been a good fight to watch.

And the other flip side is Joe Calzaghe would have learned to patch up these holes that Bernard "exposed". Any fighter with sense goes back and watches what they did wrong, then corrects and makes adjustments so they don't happen again.

Pavlik would be smart to take note of this.

              Gotta expect this from Joe.
Pavlik would have had trouble at 175. His power does not carry.

Oh, you mean like what he did to Jeff Lacy?

Hopkins was to Pavlik what Joe was to another one-dimensional ****er who can't box well but can hit hard.

So to answer the question, Joe already did what Bernard did and it's not a case of "can Joe do the same". Both Hopkins and Calzaghe produced a master class against a less skilled opponent who took them lightly.

I think Joe would make a worse mess of Pavlik. Why? Because he throws more shots. Sheer accumulation would make Pavlik's face look like a pizza.

Compare Lacy's face to Pavlik's after their fights with these two greats.

I dunno, I think his power would carry OK, I just don't think he has 1 punch KO power really. He's heavy handed, keeps good pressure, works the entire round every round, but he's not a real power puncher. His frame is big enough, I think he'd be OK at LH, once he grows into it, but the kid needs some more experience with slick boxers, and he needs to learn to counter better. His style has worked for him to this point, but he's in there with the big dogs now and he needs to learn some new tricks to bring to the ring with him.

Gimme a break, he's been that way his whole career. I said only a brilliant fighter could expose it because it isn't easy to get to those flaws. But they aren't going away overnight. Even you don't believe that, man.

Yeah, it's just that simple. All you need is sense.

Pavlik is a 26-year-old young champ who just went to school courtesy of Bernard Hopkins. Yet he should take note while the more set in his ways, 36-year-old Calzaghe will just "patch" it up. Yeah, until it rips again.

                      No, I do believe that.

Besides, Calzaghe has a chin made from melted down cars.

                      Good luck, Roy.
