Roy Jones Jr vs. Joe Calzaghe: One and Done For Joe

It appears that unbeaten WBC/WBO/WBA super middleweight champ Joe Calzaghe is back on the road to retirement. Calzaghe has switched his plans around in the last few weeks, initially stating that he would retire after one more fight and then stating that he would fight a few more times depending on the money. Now Calzaghe has once again made a call for retirement after his next fight, scheduled to take place on November 15. [details]

Jones or Pavlik would be good. Those are the top two choices I expected. If he wants to retire that's fine. There's nothing wrong with leaving a little early. No point trying to drag it on in a sport like boxing.

I find it odd that on the one hand Calzaghe keeps stressing what a great position he's in with all the top guys chasing him for once, yet he's not really planning on taking advantage of that.

Temptation might get him to have another fight, but he really wants to keep his 0 now, and who can beat him. It's a shame his biggest fights are no coming at the end of his career, that coupled with him not being in his prime means there's a big risk for getting a loss on his record.

Also, has Pavlik or his camp said a word about a possible Calzaghe match? Joe and Roy are pretty transparent but nothing from them!?

To be fair, Joe has always said he would 'probably' retire after one more fight, although always said that 'its famous last words', so I don't think we should read too much into this one way or another. I personally would like to see him fight both Pavlik and Jones, but I think we have to ask ourselves if realistically Pavlik's people will be willing to put him in with Joe.

At the end of the day a fighter has to retire sometime and has to turn his back on at least one potential opponent, if it has to be Pavlik, so be it.

As Joe says, beating Roy Jones would be a good way to end his career, and I guarantee that Joe will not only beat Roy Jones, but beat him up. Should be a quality night for Joe's fans and an uncomfortable one for the naysayers. Lets get it on.

It makes me laugh when Calzaghe fans think Roy will be easy work.

i can see him fighting a couple more times. i think after he beats roy the lure of fighting pavlik maybe too much. the roy fight gets hhim money the pavlik fight more recognition. at this stage beating roy i dont beleive is really that impressive at least not to me anyway but beating a young hungry unbeaten fighter like pavlik is impressive. just my opinion

Yeah i know. Roy is no Bernard and i don't think he beat him. Roy is faster and hits harder than Joe. And they are the same size so that mean Roy is not fighting a big LHW which means more trouble for Joe. Roy has only lost to 2 bigger men in Tarver and Johnson who hit hard as hell and not that slaps which didn't even put a whelp on Bernard
