I am still of the opinion that Pavlik has a tough chin. After seeing some comments in other threads about Pavlik's "mediocre" chin I wanted to hear some more thoughts on the subject.
If you think Taylor had the chance to put Pavlik away and didn't, you're right but this isn't because Taylor didn't land some great shots. Taylor punched himself out, yes, but not throwing a bunch of errant punches. He punched himself out on Pavlik's head. I said earlier I couldn't see why Smoger would be a big punch away from stopping the fight, but watching the fight again I can.
I watched round 2 in slow-motion on my DVR. Here is a breakdown:
At 1:49 remaining Taylor counters a Pavlik jab with a jab of his own and a hard right hand over the top that lands behind Pavlik's left ear. That is the punch that starts the trouble for Pavlik. Taylor then throws two jabs followed by a right hook to the chin that staggers Kelly back. Taylor misses a couple punches, then puts a right hook behind the ear, another HARD right hook behind the ear and a left hook to the chin followed by two right hooks to the temple. Taylor turns Pavlik with his left hand, throws a right hook that Pavlik blocks with his glove and Taylor turns him a little more with the left. Now Pavlik has his hands down and seems to stick his face out inviting Taylor to throw. Taylor does: a quick left jab off the cheekbone, a right hook to the chin and a left hook hard on the nose and Pavlik is on his way down. Taylor gives him one last right to the head for good measure and Pavlik is down at 1:38. At 1:35 he is back on his feet and headed to the neutral corner.
I won't bother going further than this, but needless to say Pavlik took more punishment after the knockdown and was able to sustain, though he did almost go down once more.
If you think Pavlik has a mediocre or suspect chin, then you really must not think Taylor can punch, because he hit Pavlik flush a ton of times with "bad intentions" and Pavlik preserved.
