ESPN+ is currently offering the Big Fights versions of both Dempsey-Tunney fights with only a few rounds shown.
But I wonder why, nearly 100 years after the fight, the incorrect version of the first fight keeps getting distributed.
In the Big Fights version, Round 1 is actually Round 3. And the round labeled Round 10 is actually either the seventh or eighth round.
So the Big Fights version actually shows rounds 3, 6, 9 and either round 7 or 8 is labeled round 10.
The official films, that include 8 of the 10 rounds of the fight also incorrectly label Round 10. It shows the correct rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9, but round 10 is either, in truth, round 7 or 8.
At the conclusion of the fight in that version, and the one everyone is most familiar with, both guys sit down, the ref checks his scorecard and the cornermen put towels on their shoulders.
This is not how the fight ended.
The fight actually ends with both guys hugging, their corners rushing into the ring and pulling them apart. This is verified by a British film of the fight from a greater distance away.
A few years ago, a guy on YouYube (The FightFilms Guy) put together various versions of the fight - including the correct round 1 and the correct round 10. I've attached a link here.
The only Rounds he doesn't have in his composite are rounds 7 and 8.
And, if you go back and compare each round in all the versions of the fight available ... the only round the FightFilm Collector on Youtube is missing in his version is the round that Big Fights has always labeled round 10, but which clearly is not.
Which means the Big Fights version of Round 10 is, in truth, either round 7 or 8.
I recently merged my copies and removed the audio so the correct rounds are in the proper order.
But it would be nice to know if Round 10 in the Big Fights film is actually Round 7 or Round 8?
It would also be nice to know why it continues to be purposely mislabeled for 100 years. Or why it was mislabeled to begin with?
Did the guy recording the official films discover his camera died before Round 10? Is that how this all began?
Because Round 9 exists. But the correct versions of round 10 that actually exist are taken from much further away.
And the official film contains the correct round 1. Why does the ESPN version continue to label Round 3 as Round 1?
Drives me nuts.
