    Ali's broken jaw, which round?

In reference to a post arguing Ali and Liston's courage, the 'broken jaw' (Norton I) came up.

I am curious as to the forum's opinion regarding the timing of the broken jaw.

Ali supporters claimed that Ali's jaw was broken in the 1st round . . . while Norton himself claims he broke Ali's jaw in the 15th round, claiming he saw the punch/moment it happened.

(I am unaware whether Ali ever made a direct statement regarding the timing of the broken jaw, I did read Norton's claim.)

I am curious what fight fans like us think happened, not the general public.

Any opinions? Did Ali fight 15 rounds with a broken jaw? Is it a truth or an urban legend?

I am truly ambivalent on the matter and quite curious as to what you guys think.

    - -Never heard the 15 rd claim, esp since the first fight and maybe the 2nd were 12 rd fights.

Pretty sure it came in the first 3 rds and it was a doozy of a break. Ali tuff as Gump!

You are correct about the 15 - my mistake - must have been a 12 rounder -- only III was for 15 rounds.

You think he fought the final 9 rounds with his jaw broken, that is frightening to behold. You have to figure that a second blow might due permanent damage.

P.S. I definitely remember Norton discrediting Ali's claim, claiming it happened in the last round (sorry for the goof.)

I’ve looked into this extensively. If you watch the video of the live broadcast there is numerous mentions about Ali having an issue with his mouth. Cosell mentions it and elaborates further that Ali is holding his mouth strangely in round eight and he calls over Pecheco and he confirmed it as a “lose tooth”.

Round six Ali was hit with numerous sharp snappy punches notably right hands. My general thought is some major damage was done this round.

Was his jaw broken in round six? I say no as no man could take so many head shots with a completely broken jaw round after round.

So my conclusion is that Ali’s jaw was injured early to mid fight. Round 12 is when Ali begins to bleed heavily from the mouth a definite sign of it being broken. Thus the full break comes in round 12.

I don’t know what round but I know Marty Marshall broke Sonny Liston’s jaw in the early rounds of the fight that Marshall won.
