    Mike Tyson vs Gene Tunney

Could Tunney defeat the Tyson that beat Spinks?

Hed be blown away in similar fashion i think. Tyson just too powerful for a man weighing 30lbs less. Id love to think of tunney out boxing mike like he did with dempsey but i just can see a man of his size withstanding the onslaught.

Tyson would be a terrible opponent for him.

In a legal deposition Tunney clearly explains the Dempsey fight. he wanted to fight Jack in a state where he could win by decision, as opposed to new Jersey which at the time had a different policy. Tunney was accutely aware that he was not KOing Dempsey.

Tyson fights like Dempsey. The reason why Gene came in smaller was deliberate. He wanted mobility and speed. I see nothing to suggest he would fall to Tyson given his mobility and ring IQ. Tyson retains that punch... Gene would tie him up, put him on his heels, create distance... Holly did it to a version of Tyson that was still dangerous.

Tunney has the iq and footwork to outbox tie up and frustrate Tyson.

But he just to small no Heavy pre 60s will beat Tyson one thing Holyfield, Lewis and Douglas all had aside from heart was size and strength. Something Tunney just wont have against him Tyson 5th round ko.

Tyson could not have made it through the marines, and he could not make it through the marine.

Would it make a difference if Tunney was told by his trainers to come in at 210 pounds? Thats roughly 20 more pounds and would be attainable by "Not training" as hard.

                    Tunney was a fantastic fighter

Tunney is truly IMO the most underrated heavy/light heavy. If Ray Robinson had been a heavyweight he would have looked like Tunney.

Watch film of Tunney, like Robinson he can fight while going backwards. he fought old school, hands held low, aware at all times where his head was, what leg his weight was upon, and always finding a line it as his man exposed a line coming towards him.

I actually think he would murder Tyson... Tyson at his best could come in hard & fast, with good head movement. Tunney, going back hits Mike until Mike drops his hands and thats the fight.

Heres the big difference: When boxing became reducable to punch selection and subtle foot movements, one planted when they threw a good hard jab. What if your jab wasn't hard enough to keep your opponent off of you? Ask Michael Spinks about that versus Tyson.

In the way Tunney fought, the lead was thrown as you stepped towards the opponent, you did not have to be planted, rather you could use the step in for your power... But watch Tunney and you will see that even as he steps back, he can throw that lead, trapping the guy coming in. Jack Johnson could do this as well.
