Fight To The Finish with George Chuvalo

Is Chuvalo the only guy walking away from a fight to the finish with any heavyweight in history? I believe he outlasts anyone over 100 rounds.

Young Big George lifted him off the canvas, and had the ropes not been there (and had the ref not stopped the fight) he would have suffered his first KD.

IMO, Na, he's not that guy.

I don’t think there’s anyone who has a steel enough jaw, face, eyes, and at the same time the skills to beat everyone at a fight to the death in boxing. Sum guys like Chuvalo could definitely beat more skilled fighters with his endurance and whiskers through attrition. Tex Cobb could certainly take a shot, but never did u think that all he needed was more rounds to beat Holmes. By the way I love Chuvalo, and he gives a great interview. He speaks extremely well. “Ali went to hospital, I went out Dancing with my wife.” I believe is one of his quotes.

Too bad you didn't tell Joe Frazier that.

I respect Chuvalo for his grit. He's one of the great Croatian warriors.

But what a bum. He qas a Heavyweight Joe Grim.

He wouldn't make it out of the amateurs today. At least not fighting like that.

The skin of a man's face has to give out eventually. No man will outlast his own skin. Skin has stopped more fights than anything else.

Joe shattered facial bone and the eye was only going to become more seriously damaged.

That fight didn't make it out of the 4th round. Thankfully.

Between February '65 and his title shot at Ali in March of '66 Chuvalo dropped a UD to Paterson, a UD to Ernie Terrell and a PTS loss to a second shelf fighter named Eduardo Corletti. While only scoring wins over a small group of journeyman fighters, yet somehow he still got a shot at the title.

Why did this guy get a shot at the title?

Better yet, he starts off the year '65 with a loss to Paterson and ends it with a loss to Terrell. Between losses he had five victories over the likes of Bill Nielseon 25-5-1; Sonny Andrews 1-7-0; Orvin Veazy 3-8-2; Dave Bailey 13-12-3; and Joe Bygraves 42-26-2 and this somehow qualifies him for a #3 ranking by The Ring ****zine for the year 1965.

I thought we were suppose to respect The Ring ****zine's rankings as the 'bible of boxing.'

IMO this guy's ranking looks bought!

My only question is, who paid for the ranking, his people or was it Ali's people looking for a 'bum of the month' to fight?

I'm tempted to pick Ali's people.

                    He'd been dropped by Cooper.

He won both fights against Liston under mysterious circumstances - the rematch being an out-right work.

He was matched against Cleveland Williams for God knows what reason - even before being shot Williams was a gatekeeper at best.

He looked pathetic in trying to dispatch of hopeless Karl Mildenberger - after predicting an early KO, no less. They were wearing 6 oz. gloves!

So yeah, the Chuvalo fight is sketch.

But then Chuvalo "stopped" Quarry under bizarre circumstances. That was super weird. Probably his handlers had their connections, too.
