De La Hoya Vs Quartey Forgotten Classic (Highlights)

    Fan film by me.

    Two warriors going at in a forgotten classic;

Ok not a bout likely forgotten by the boxing scholars on here but elsewhere this fight has been forgotten.

    - -Good stuff stu.

I was swamped with work and kids back then and could rarely squeeze in any boxing then, but JCChavez first fight I caught live because it was such a big fight.

It was clear Chavez was past his prime, but the thinking was the new kid was going to have to earn it. I was not surprised given DKing was his promoter to see Chavez enter the ring with a gaping, oozing 1" cut over his eye.

That he could pass a medical in that state tells you all you need to know about the way boxing conducts it's business.

Years later I reviewed some of Oscars biggest controversies because he'd gotten so big that he was a menace to the established power brokers. Maybe the two biggest were Tito and Pea that I had him winning easily, so I wasn't interested in the Quartey fight.

Then the BS split in the first Floyd fight that featured TUE mostly cowering on the ropes and the way he suddenly walked from the rematch and his biggest career purse for the first of his fake retirements pretty much sunk Oscar mentally.

Manny jumped 2 wt classes to take the same exact match Oscar had been in training for a year and the rest history.

Great stuff! I look forward to more.

De La Hoya's hype had a lot with me getting serious about Boxing. This fight is actually pretty iconic: it's bigger than the men involved. I am glad you dusted this one off.

Oscar was severely drained for that fight, coming in at 145 lbs for the weigh-in. A weight he hadn't been at for 7 years. It's never smart for older boxers to drop down in weight classes.

Freddie Roach even commented that he could see the IV marks on Oscar's arms from where they had tried to rehydrate him.

        You really are a simpleton.

Really? I guess that's why boxers don't drop weight classes often. MMA fighters actually do it successfully at times. Maybe because a lot of them are wrestlers and have more experience with safely losing and gaining weight. Interesting. Thanks for the info man.

It can be done, especially when you're younger. But as you age the body tends to naturally grow into a higher weight.

Oscar by that point in his career was a junior middleweight and had even fought two fights at 160 lbs. Dropping back down to 145 lbs was sheer folly.

Another guy that seemed to suffer from the effects of too much weight jumping was Roy Jones. He was never the same after beating John Ruiz at heavyweight then going back down to 175 lbs.

Good stuff, green k given. Must be why a boxer moves up more often if he hits a wall in a weight class than down.

                - -Don't take much to exceed your last functioning , mangled single noggin cell.

Manny took the exact same fight that TUE 50-0 ducked out on in the middle of promotions.

You'd have manny ducking a $20+ mil purse to fight for your *******jacks. Sad but true about you.

I remember that robbery like it was yesterday. Quartey got robbed in the worst way I've ever seen. Dlh threw countless punches in the last round & was gifted the robbery despite getting destroyed the entire fight, all because he won 1 single rd by landing more punches than I've ever seen in a single rd,but he lost that fight by a landslide.

                    How did you score it?

                    I had it 115-112 Quartey.
