    Best Boxing Books

    G’day

I just finished a gem of a book on the Aussie welterweight Jack Carroll who was number 1 contender for Barney Ross in 1936 but Ross wouldnt come to Australia and fight him

Woulda been a gem of a fight if it came off and Carroll was one of the best Aussies ever woulda beat the heck outta Horn if they fought
Barney Ross biography is another gem lottsa crazy stuff in that mans life

Dont think he chickened our against Carroll but Carroll was the Aussie Charley Burley no one knows him but he was a legend undefeated in his last five years beating all the top guys

The book on Burley was legendary as well

What are some other boxing biographies you love????

    Cheers

    - -Best boxing book or bio?

Best book is Bare Fists by Bob Mee. The essential history of bare knuckles prize fight centered in England until John L showed up.

biographies huh? There was a decent one written about braddock some time ago. And recently wasn't there a new bio about Liston? The book had an interesting supposition and came to the defence of Liston. It was nice to see, I have a soft spot for Liston. he could be a murderin son of a ___ But he could be very decent when respected, was very good to children, despite being abused by his dad, and was alleged to have been a sweet husband to his longtime wife.

It depends what you’re looking for.

As far as books written about a particular fighter then I’d highlight the following

Clay Moyle’s book on San Langford
Stephen Compton’s book on Harry Greb
Joe Gans: The longest fight is also a good read IMO
Andrew Gallimores book on Freddie Welsh is good too
Then some of the better auto bios would be
Sugar Ray Robinson (with Dave Anderson)
            Larry Holmes
            Joe Frazier
            Jake LaMotta
Rocky Graziano (somebody up there likes me)
            Ken Buchanan

Then you’ve got some absolutely fantastic literary pieces which are a collection of essays like The Sweet science by AJ Liebling. The neutral corner also by the same writer.

Springs Toledo has written some fantastic books in recent years like Gods of war, murderers row and in the cheap seats. He’s about the best sportswriter today. His new Greb book is superb. I finished it in one sitting yesterday.

            Other must reads are
In this corner by Peter Heller - 42 world champs tell their story
            Corner men by Ronald Fried

I’ve recently tracked down an autobiography written by Jimmy Wilde “Fighting was my business” which I really enjoyed. Also tracked down biographical books on Wilde, Jim Driscoll and Freddie Welsh all from a writer called Gareth Harris. He confessed to not be a boxing fan and to be honest unless you really want to know about this era and these fighters you may not like. They are excellent sources of information and write-ups from those fighters and that time. I’m very interested in that golden era of Welsh boxing.

Did you ever read any books on Johnny Famechon or Lionel Rose seeing as though you’re from Australia? I saw the Famechon book a few days ago. I’ll probably get that.

              - -Dunno if a mere bio can capture where Rose came from to where he ended up.

              Epic...
