We've got different languages on this.
PUNCH (as in OUCH) comes from the French weapon the ponchon.

PUNCH (as in mmmm, not bad) comes from Sanskrit! PANC means "five," and they made a mixed drink with five ingredients: sugar, lemon, water, ****e (or tea) and booze. The Brits who were in India brought the idea back home, and varied the recipe. You throw in whatever is handy. In Hawaii that meant a lot of different types of fruit. "Hawaiian Punch" became popular in the U.S. in the 1930's and by the 1950's or 60's, they advertised on TV with those notoriously violent cartoon commercials: "Hey, how about a nice Hawaiian Punch?" "Sure!" #@#@#@!! (what a punchline)

We can thank the Italians for PUNCH (as in ha ha) as they had a comedy character Punchinello, who became the comic Punch of Punch and Judy puppet shows. Punch became a symbol of comedy in England and the mascot of Punch ****zine.
