Vitali was dominating Lewis, people forget Lewis was supposed to fight Kirk Johnson, but do to injury Kirk pulled out , and vitali took the fight and was the better fighter that night. For whatever it's worth Lennox never laced up the gloves again.

Lennox Lewis was past his best and didn't train properly. He was going to squash Kirk Johnson in a couple of rounds. At the eleventh hour that all changed, and in stepped a hungry, young, largely unknown beast of a Heavyweight in Vitali Klitschko. Lewis still weathered his storm and smashed him to bits.

This fight will always be one of those that inspires debate. The reason is simple: Both Vitalie and lewis fans just know how to complete the puzzle! For the Vitalie group, Lewis had a good round, but Vitalie was going to get back to work! For the Lewis group Lewis was coming on and starting to hit Vitalie real good!
For the record I tend to be in the Lewis corner on this one. First of all for the longest time people didn't seem to want to acknowledge that Lewis was training to fight a very weak opponent in Kirk Johnson. It was ridiculous how people would try to argue that Johnson was a threat... No and Lewis decided to slack and then in an act of unmitigated hubris decides to let Vitalie sub in.
Vitalie people often say that he was also undertrained, but look at the weight of both guys going in! Lewis was in horrendous shape.
Lewis was coming on a and starting to rock Vitalie which is one reason they decided to stop the fight. Vitalie was not defending well, though he was fighting back. I think that if the fight had continued lewis would have beaten Vitalie by TKO and possibly disfigured him in the process.
But we will never know to be fair.
