    Ring Size Again

One of Tyson's early pro fights was fought in a 16 1/2 ft. ring, as was legal in the state of New York for non title fights. I could find it again, if I were just more ambitious.

Other fights even older were sometimes fought in miniature rings, too, when the eye judges.

In fact it was against Jesse Ferguson in Tyson's 18th fight. The exact ring size was corrected during the broadcast to 16' 8".

      "miniature rings"................18ft & 20ft is the norm.
16.8 is a 17ft. for all practical purposes.
An 18ft. is the perfect size up to Middleweight.
A 20ft. is good for 175--Open, if you want to stop guys from running around cut the size down so they have to box. Cutting the ring off in a 20ft is not a fair situation for a fighter who presses. Canelo went from corner to corner at times without throwing a punch, sorry but watching that for rounds gets old. Mayweather did that the last 8 years of his career and it made for boring fights.
A quality boxer needs to learn distance correctly and that technique will work in ANY size ring. Lateral movement using steps along with step in and clinching (one arm) and turning the opponent are skills long gone but thats how highly skilled pros fought.
Today boxing is an amateur style that has changed the sport dramatically.

        Agree with the post above.

I hear certain people on here talking about cutting off the ring as if it should happen by magic but even the best pressure fighters struggle when trying to do it in a big ring where the guy literally runs around the ring.

I mean guys like thurman, Jacob's, ward and canelo have in recent times actually done full laps of the ring lol

This is a world removed from the likes of Ali, whitaker, Leonard and Co who could move and punch.

There used to be a list out there, that gave the exact ring sizes allowed per commission rules for every state, but can't find it now.

Over 11 square feet difference between a 17' and a 16' 8" ring. One would not think that much off the top on one's head.

"One would not think that much off the top on one's head".

Actually the difference would be inches under your feet at the ropes.

The turnbuckles are adjustable to set the ropes in forward.
                A 22ft platform could be a 20 square down to 17square.
I owned an Everlast full size ring, however the ring mentioned here (Tyson fought in) was owned by a company
in New York that used it as a rental and I know that ring very well. Back in the 60's through the 80's I think there were 3 companies that had rentals with complete set up crews that traveled with the rings.
There was one ring that still had planks instead of sections that was used for ever, that flooring was terrible!

Any old school fighter and trainer from the northeast would remember that thing.

I'll bet Cus did not mind those smaller rings for his boy Mike. One advantage of New York.

One of the big tricks they would use is Germany, adjusting the ring size.
