Gene Fullmer was a terrific fighter who was always in top condition and fought hard all the time.
The "Cyclone" fought and beat many greats most of those encounters where at the end of their careers however they all had successes right up till their end. Winning over Basilio and Robinson and Pender were accomplishments.
Don was a tough guy he went the distance twice with Benvenuti
fighting close battles against him. He won and lost to Griffth Tiger and Archer. In 79 pro bouts he was stopped only twice!
Pat was a lightweight who had a very short career and was closer to a club level talent compared to his brothers who were world champs and contenders.

Very tough men who had no problems "stretching the rules"! HA!

I certainly wouldn't say Gene Fullmer's resume isn't deep, he fought a lot of the best fighters of his day and defeated most of them.

Fullmer was an ugly fighter, the fighter of today who most reminds me of him is Marco Huck. They both circle the ring, throwing out single jabs (Huck's is better, Fullmer's about the ugliest jab in history) and single counter straight right crosses, waiting for their moment to rush in throwing punches and brawling. Fullmer was very dirty, loved to headbutt, land forearms and elbows, hold and rabbit punch. Hard as nails and very good at spoiling.

Don Fullmer wasn't too dissimilar to Gene, his stance and build a carbon copy but he had more of a boxer style as he could actually throw a decent jab. However he just wasn't as strong and effective as his brother. He also fought quite a lot of the best of his time albeit with less success than Gene.

Gene got by on piss and vinegar. Tough brawler who could take and dish it out. The guy was lumpy! hard fat and bone. When you hit guys like that there is nothing soft to hit, and its demoralizing because you load up and before you can even admire your work, they have hit you back on places you never even knew existed. Fullmer beating Ray Robinson, even late, was a testiment to his methods.

Everyone thinks its just about threshold, and taking punishment but guys like Fullmer, Galienta, and (even though he had more refinement) La Mota learned to take the zing out of shots that would have put a lot of guys in chrome bubble alley!

Gene is pushing ATG. I put him over Graziano in middleweights. It is amazing how many rabbit punches the referees let him get away with. Gene contributed heavily to his opponents' eventual dementia. One could go about counting the number of rabbit punches he landed on Robby alone, if they had some spare time and access to the full fights. Has anyone ever done that?

Gene's jab was one of the most peculiar I have seen. Even more peculiar--it worked! He seems to have thrown it from the elbow. Never seen another jab quite like it.

Robinson probably got hit with more rabbit punches in his career than legal punches, almost every Robinson fight I've seen on film his opponent rabbit punches him like crazy in the clinch and Fullmer was probably the worst at it.

I forget which writer it was but i'm sure a writer describes Fullmer's jab as resembling a *******/**** salute.

Well, I went ahead and did the count--at least for the first three fights. Three rounds were missing from that fight. In soite of that I thought the judging was awful. One judge had it 9-6 for Fullmer, one had it 11-4 for Robinson and the last had it a draw. It looked to me like Robinson won. He might have been pissed, because he left the ring before the announcer could interview him as promised.

****ing hell, that's a lot of rabbit punching. Something I've noticed Fullmer do, that Ward seems to emulate a little, is to crouch and charge in like a swan in attack-mode, shoulder-first, getting low, driving in and up into the opponent. Unlike Ward, however, Fullmer, once inside, really goes to town. 'Cyclone' is a very apt nickname in his case!!!
