Joe Louis and Tony Galento

This was a pretty good fight to watch. It's also interesting to see both fighters years later and hear their perspective on the fight.


It looks very strange to see no standing 8 count/ Neutral corner after a knockdown.

Haha Toney was a character, I used to looooove that program and that was one of my favorite episodes....this was before the internet and before one could pull up almost any fight on Google!

A real character in the history of boxing!
One very tuff man with a great chin who no one "enjoyed" fighting.
He had power in the left hand and he did win against some solid competition.
He was the amateur Jersey champ at middle, lightheavy and heavy as a kid.
I think he was stopped 5 times in a 114 bouts and thats amazing because he suffered a right eye abrasion early in his career and that alone should have caused him more tko's but he with stood alot of abuse.
There were alot of guys like Tony back in the day who would foight anyone at anytime and honestly thought that they could handle anyone.
What he lacked in technique he made up for with an awkward stance and threw round house shots that well schooled fighters had trouble with until they could gauge him. Well if you didn't "gauge "him quick enough you could find yoiurself on your can or KO'd!

This show was far too kind to Galento, Galento called him a lot worse than simply a bum. I suppose it would have ruined the ambience of the show if they revealed the full extent of Galento's horribleness.

It is amazing how feisty some old fighters remain. Basilio is that way too. The old prizefighter I knew who died at 101 years of age was that way too. Hopkins will be that way as an old man.

You do realize we're taliking about professional fighters here?
The Irish were first in America then the Polish & Italians and ***s and Germans and on & on &on and everyone was in competition to gain a foot hold for better jobs and security. Then the Great Depression beat everyone up!!!! These weren't times for
carrying" about others it was time to get what you can or your family gets stomped on in the cold.

I'm not saying it was right I am saying different times and different measures to exsist. If your born here in the very early 1900 or late 1800 or arrived on a boat at that time you had no time to help another off the floor you needed to help yourself and yes there was resentment and cruelity.
Hell just look at this forum and some of the members here who "hate" fighters and have no problem stating it. They depict degrading pictures and disrespect them daily. So there you go, still going on today.
Loved Basilio, met him once about 35 years ago at a boxing award dinner and he was pleasant guy.

I'm pretty sure Galento was the only opponent Louis ever faced who kept phoning him up to racially abuse him. Galento was a horrible ignorant man. In light of the criticism a lot of todays heavyweights get for being out of shape just look at Galento, his idea of training was guzzling beer.

Yeah he was pretty funny. Joe Louis mentioned that about Galento in his book which made me try to find some interviews with Galento.


I also think Galento's physique makes a lot of people forget that he was a big puncher who also had some skills.
