Will the MW/Pac fight really revive boxing, or is it the last gasp of a star becoming a red giant?

The answer may be partially contingent on results. If there is anything that really stinks about the fight, like bad refereeing or a horrible call, it will not breathe life into the collapsed body of the sport.

Only an event that lives up to its hype on every level will breathe any life back or create any revival at all.

If fans are even mildly disappointed, wouldn't that just be business as usual for boxing, as people go away grumbling again?

If past is precedent, get ready for another black eye and the respirator for boxing.

Boxing doesn't need reviving - it's doing quite well! But of course a "real" historian will always tell you, that boxing isn't what it used to be, that we're in the weakest era ever, with sissy boxers who could never have made it 'back in the day', etc. It was no different 100 years ago:

The boxers today do not know how to fight... former bantamweight champion Harry forbes, 1911.

I tell you they're a bunch of ham and egg fighters. Too bad they weren't around in the old days. They would have made good punching bags for real fighters.... Joe Choynski on the 1918 crop of fighters.

That is a great point, and the exact same can be said about the 'Boxing is dying' talks.
Those type of articles were even made many decades ago when the fights were in black and white. Before Ali, Tyson and the Fab 4. Go figure.

Fighters of yesterday being better than today is subjective, but boxing not being the main stream sport it used to be is absolutely true.

If Mayweather vs Pacquiao was meant to "revive" boxing I think someone must have switched the syringe marked "stimulant" for another labelled "euthanasia".

It really was an appalling advertisement for the sport. Basically, one fighter had knowingly waited for the other's skills to diminish to a fraction of their former glory and then pounced.

I know Manny is blaming an injury. But injury aside - he LOOKED a SHOT FIGHTER from the first minute. Not that Mayweather looked all that great either.

As for the undercard - ABYSMAL. No wonder so many people were booing in the crowd.

I can't remember feeling this depressed after a big fight as I do now. Boxing needs to take a long, hard look at itself and make changes. If not - I really do fear for its future as the sport I knew and loved growing up.
