If he was "overprotective" why would he make the match to begin with?
Duran was a young guy when he stopped Ken why look backwards he won!
DeJesus was just ahead and that turned out to be a stumbbling block.
It however was the lesson Duran needed to become a great fighter!
Theres to much attention on rematches these days. If the money is tops with the rematch opponent then ok but this is about earning and moving forward. It's a business first and a sport to the fans.

According to Wilipedia Gil Clancy is quoted as saying there was no demand for a rematch. I did read that Duran was suspended in New York for a time for not granting a rematch and pulled out of fight with Ortiz. His Management wanted him to defend his title in Panama early on. His first fight against Dejesus was in new York so I am not sure if my source(his book) is accurate on his suspension.
New York was always a pain in the azz to work in!!! Every state had it's own rules and laws and if you don't have an "in" with the commision through your promoter or atleast matchmaker they could be a bore.
Why suspend Duran if there was no return in the contract?
I loved the stage in New York but it was only one step above working in Rhode Island or Mass. they were the worst in the country the exception being anywhere in the south.
The Mass. "holyer than holy" told my wife she couldn't work the corner because "women belong in the kitchen".......
after I explained she had just worked the corner at the Nationals and last week was in the corner in Madison Sq. Garden for the main event I think she could work the dump we were at in Mass.
Then I proceeded to lock the jerk who said that to her in a locker and was suspended for a year in Mass....................big deal!
From State to State in boxing you were entering different countries it seemed! If your not "in" your "out"! hahaha it still like that to a degree hopefully all the old AAU jerks in Mass & RI are dead!
They refused to call amateur boxing the USA/ABF when it broke from the AAU.
They used to have old AAU banners up 3 years after the ABF was incharge!
Kenny deserved the rematch because he was an outgoing fighting champion and wanted one desperately. Simply a matter of respect. Duran, in all liklihood, would have whipped him handily again. Competitive boxers never believe they can be beaten, even when they just were.

Ortiz? Like Carlos Ortiz? Roberto vs ortiz was on the verge of happening... I never knew that... That would be a dream fight for me, though ortiz was probably a shell of himself...
Correct me if its not Carlos... I just never realized him and Duran were close to fighting.. Two of my favorites

This was written in Hands of Stone, Carlos ended up fighting Buchanan and lost. He said he lost his motivation because he wanted Duran for the title and the fight was supposed to happen and did not. Carlos was getting up there in age but certainly had the experience advantage over Duran at that time.
