I always liked how Tunney would throw really straight punches in his combinations.. Against Dempsey he would use his feet to get the angle on Dempsey, and would fire off 4-5 punch combo with a bunch of straight punches right down the pipe .. I have seen a lot of fighters do it, but I think Tunney did it the best

One of the very best. Understood angles, mechanics and how to work, apply techique under real conditions. Tunney came from that place, that line of techicians, men like Gem mace, Jim Corbett, but he was probably the best of the lot. One only has to see how he handled Dempsey to know how good he was. And when considering Tunney fought and was competative with two guys considered by many to be the most ferocious and best ATG's....Greb and Dempsey, well it gives one a perspective on how good Tunney was.

When he lost to Greb the first. time.Greb used every dirty tactic you could think to humiliate and demoralize Tunney..Yet instead of getting discouraged Tunney managed to come up with an effective counter against Greb ..Using both his fists to punch Greb
in the chest..everytime Greb tried to pressure him Which allowed Tunney to nuetralize Grebs attack and win everyone of their rematches..Tunney had good stamina..Tunney believed boxing matches should be 20 rounds....Its a shame he retired when he did it would have been interestig to see how an aging Gene would have fared against the next generation of fighters such as Schmeling Sharkey and Baer
