Boxers Who Failed to live up to the Hype

talkin' about the most hyped up boxers who got the big stage and flopped.

The first thought being this guy

Race certainly played a part in how this got hyped as a new white contender taking on the champion who was yet to earn his respect in Larry Holmes. Only three fights after his loss and two of them were knockouts by Michael Spinks and George Foreman.

Depends on which level we are talking about. Mike Tyson is one imo. Dubbed to be the future "best heavyweight of all times", but unfortunately failed when stepping it up for whatever reason.

Other noticables are Andre Dirrell, Jeff Lacy as mentioned above. Going back you could mention a few more.

So putting aside that you obviously have an agenda here, yes, he's been in a few good fights back in his day. The Arturo Gatti fight he was sharp as hell and beat him the hell up.

Andrew Golata had some skills and some talent but his head and heart were not involved in success!!!!

I disagree with Gerry Cooney as an over-hyped fighter! The media didn't do Gerry any favores but people in boxing knew Gerry could punch with his left hand and was a good competitor! I remember him as a young kid fighting from super middle into heavyweight! He was a good amatuer and a good pro. Not beating Holmes and Forman & Spinks is no shame! He did win over Norton, Lyle, J. Young, J.D. Denis so he fought better than average fighters to get the shot! He fought Holmes hard and then hung in as best he could! Holmes was a great fighter, Gerry was a good fighter!
Today you won't find a nicer ex-fighter to meet, gracious man and a tribute to who the second tier guys are all about!! Atleast what they should be!

mark breland did very well as a pro but he was so crazy hyped comin outta the 84 games that anything short of him breakin records n winnin titles up to lightheavy was a letdown. u kno? also kelcie banks n johhny bumphus were xpected to do more as pros n howard davis shoulda won a belt in at least one of his few shots at it. I remember the watt fight at one point when he used his feet and scored with a quick combo thinkin that's all he has to do wtf is wrong with him? but I also remember that the newspaper reported that he had a meltdown axiety attack a couple days before the fight n quoted as sayin something about not being ready. then there's Camacho, who was exactly allthat up until chapo tore him a brand new hole. the then turned into the opposite of macho, a running hit and grab kinda guy.
