    Floyd Patterson a great fighter

Floyd Patterson is one of my favorite fighters and is vastly underated by today's boxing fans who remember Floyd for his two first round defeats to Sonny Liston and dismiss the rest of his career yet Patterson was a great fighter who fought and beat the best of a golden era of the sport.. here is an article on Floyd.

Why The Post Title Floyd Patterson Was Better

    By Jim Amato

Poor Floyd Patterson. Everyone loves him but not everyone respects him as a fighter or champion. You rarely here his name tossed about when the topic of all time great heavyweights is brought up. What a shame!

Who is to blame for the heartbreaking oversight ? People tend to forget that Patterson thrashed Archie Moore much more impressively then Marciano did the night he became the youngest man ever to win the heavyweight crown . Still when a " Dream Match " between Marciano and Patterson is talked about, Floyd is quickly dismissed... Simply put, Rocky had the PUNCH and Floyd did not have the whiskers.

After the Moore victory, Floyd would make " safe " defenses against guys like Pete Rademacher, and Tommy " Hurricane " Jackson. Floyd then had his chin exposed by Ingemar Johansson. To Floyd's credit he became the first heavyweight champion to regain the title by halting Ingo not once but twice. Finally Floyd fell to the ham like fists of Charles " Sonny " Liston in one round. Sonny repeated the one round trick in their return match.

I feel that the losses to Liston helped to make Floyd a better overall fighter. The " New " Patterson took on ALL comers. Fighters that he had " avoided ", were met and beaten. The new Patterson was raising some eyebrows. Although Floyd fought and lost to a prime time Muhammad Ali in 1965, he had earned that right to another title shot by defeating Eddie Machen and George Chuvalo. Floyd would come right back after his loss to Ali and destroy the respected Henry Cooper of England. he later fought a draw with an up and coming Jerry Quarry.

When Ali was stripped of his title for refusing to be inducted into the Army, the W.B.A. set up an eight man elimination tourney to determine a new champion. Floyd was among one of the eight selected. Floyd drew Jerry Quarry as his first tourney opponent. This time Jerry won a hotly disputed decision. Quarry went on to upset Thad Spencer and then lose to Jimmy Ellis in the " championship " bout.

Floyd had been so impessive against Quarry that he was matched with Ellis for Jimmy's W.B.A. title. On a cool night in Sweeden almost everyone thought that Floyd had done enough to win the verdict and regain the crown. Poor Floyd... The referee and sole voter gave it to Ellis.

Floyd would come back to win nine in a row including a points call over the rugged Oscar Bonavena. This led to another match with the now titleless Muhammad Ali. Floyd fought his heart out but could not overcome the bigger, stronger and faster Ali.

    Patterson never fought again.

    That sounds eerily familiar.....

    Hold on, now I remember.

You discredit Lewis' entire career for his two losses, and he avenged them unlike Patterson, but you still can't see the comparison or hypocrisy?

Don't get me wrong though. Patterson was a true great. I just find it hilarious you can't see what you do here so often.

Edit: Don't bother with one of your overly long winded replies about Lewis and him not fighting anyone. I just wanted to point out your terrible perspective on certain things. I don't actually want to talk about Lewis' career with you.

Funnily enough,I've recently been watching quite a few of Floyd Patterson's fights. An excellent fighter and a joy to watch.Even in the mid to late 30's he still had excellent speed, very good reflexes and still had a fresh pair of legs, despite his long career.

Didn't have the best chin, but he had great pride,an iron will and remarkable recuperative powers.A super heavyweight's heart inside a light heavyweight's body

Seems like they were just trying to get rid of Patterson after he lost to Ali.He should have gotten the decision over Quarry despite the early knockdowns.Definately got shafted in his fight with Ellis.Patterson made Ellis look really bad throughout - he controlled the tempo of the fight, counter punched brilliantly and looked as good defensively as he had ever looked in his career. Not to mention being robbed of a knockdown in the 14th(I think).

One of my personal favourite fights of his was his fight with George Chuvalo.Patterson's initial gameplan was to simply move and box Chuvalo rom the outside.Well,he did this for three or four rounds but eventually got tired. What happened then was Patterson standing his ground, fighting Chuvalo's fight and beating him down the stretch. The 9th(or perhaps it was the 10th) is one of these ATG classic rounds that's a must see for any true fan of the sport of boxing.

A great fighter, and a very classy man. He'd make mincemeat out of any of the Light heavyweight/cruiserweight champions/contenders around today.

You managed to turn this into a Lewis discussion?

BennyST the Lennox Lewis fanboy... Lewis career resembles nothing like the career of Floyd Patterson as Patterson fought the very best opponents in the world over his entire career something Lewis refused to do for the vast majority of his career.
1/. Did Patterson refuse to fight his No1 contenders
2/. Did Patterson win the title via hotly disputed decision
3/. Did Patterson have his championship belt stripped from him
4/. Did Patterson repeatedly turn down huge paydays to fight the top fighters of his era.
5/. Patterson's two KO loses was to an ATG in Sonny Liston who was at the Top of his Game.. Lewis two KO losses was to mediocre journeymen
6/. Would Patterson have beaten Lewis opponents (YES) Would Lewis have beaten Patterson's opponents (NO)

another great post popa.. Patterson vs Chuvalo was RMFOTY 1965 a brilliant fight against a prime Chuvalo who was on home soil.

Thanks for the Patterson tribute sonnyboyx2. I doubt Frazier-Patterson would have much different than Frazier Ellis, but imagine if Patterson got the win against Ellis and he took the place in the unification bout with Frazier.

Floyd was unfortunite to have ruled between the Marciano and Liston/Ali reigns. I remember his years on the NY athletic comission and his time with Tracy H. Patterson and when I think back, his contributions to boxing far exceed his noble ring career.

It seems like everyone calls guys like Ezzard Charles underrated, and if everyone is saying it, how can he be? Floyd actually IS underrated though.

Nice article! Floyd is one of my all time favorites, one of the best technical boxers ever and easily one of the most talented.

The final fight with Ali was no disgrace. Floyd was nearly 20 years post prime, but I gather it was pretty even points wise up till the finish.
