1/. Did Patterson refuse to fight his No1 contenders
2/. Did Patterson win the title via hotly disputed decision
3/. Did Patterson have his championship belt stripped from him
4/. Did Patterson repeatedly turn down huge paydays to fight the top fighters of his era.
5/. Patterson's two KO loses was to an ATG in Sonny Liston who was at the Top of his Game.. Lewis two KO losses was to mediocre journeymen
6/. Would Patterson have beaten Lewis opponents (YES) Would Lewis have beaten Patterson's opponents (NO)

patterson was a good fighter, not great,he could hold his own with fighters ranked over the top ten, when he fought a fighter with a good ranking he usually hit the canvas face first

I love Floyd Patterson, he's one of my all-time favorite fighters and one who I respect the most as a HUMAN BEING. To my mind Floyd isn't an ATG Heavyweight but IS among the very best of the near-greats ie. the next level down from ATGs. I've always thought Floyd should have campaigned as a Light-Heavy: Instead of being a near-great Heavy he would have been among the very best Light-Heavy ATGs.....right up there with Charles and Moore. Heavyweight was where the money and prestige was though so.....

Agreed, at light heavyweight he almost certainly would have been an ATG. Light heavyweight has had some real masters over the years.

I'll add Foster, Spinks, Moorer and Jones Jnr to Charles and Moore. Lots of talent. Prime for prime Patterson would have given them all superb fights, I'm sure.

Its interesting because patterson got the gold at the olympics at LHW. He should've stayed there I bet he was even faster.

Good comments. I once spoke to Floyd Patterson on a call in TV show on a cable network. I was able to ask him two questions. First I asked him if he ever considered that he might have been one of the best lightheavies ever. Floyd repsonded that would rather be a good heavyweight than a great lightheavweight. Then I asked him if he regretted not getting to fight Marciano. Without changing the expression on his face, he immediately said "no". True story.

Believe it or not, he got the gold medal at MIDDLEWEIGHT at the 52 Olympics.
