Going into the fight Johnson was on a 6 year unbeaten streak and had made 11 defences of his title and was considered #1 in the division.
That aint over the hill imo.
For a year and a half prior to the Hamed fight Ring magazine had pointed out Johnson had slipped noticeably and was ready to be taken. That's over the hill. It's not that difficult to hold onto a belt when you're fighting the Claudio Martinets and Jose Badillos of the world. The fact that Johnson went 4-6 in his next 10 fights after Hamed is what the FBI refers to as a "clue". It's pretty damn obvious Johnson was washed up at that point in his career.
LMAO how was Vasquez over the hill? He beat Rojas for what was the linear featherweight championship and defended his belt 4 times before getting dominated by Hamed.
Rojas was a nobody. Defenses against nobodies like Roque Cassiani and Yuji Watanabe don't win you any prizes either. These are the kind of joke opponents you usually saw on USA's Tuesday Nights Fights back then.

LMAO Rojas was a nobody who beat Young-Kyun Park twice.
Vasquez Bungu and Johnson were HIGH quality top 25ish P4P fighters when Hamed DOMINATED them. Get over it
I don't think he is underrated. I believe he is rated right where he should be.
It's his own fault for retiring after 1 loss. He loses to MAB. Comes back to fight 1 nobody. Then leaves the game high and dry. So of course he isn't going to leave that big of an impression. He wasn't able to show his stuff against many of the greats. MAB rematch, EM, JMM, Floyd. All these guys he could have fought. He didn't. Deciding to leave basically at the pinnacle of his career.
Oh and Chavez vs Whitaker was draw no matter how much you cry about it that will never change
You're right, it will never change. But any objective person will agree on who SHOULD have been given the win. Just out of curiosity, how did you score that fight?

Exciting does not equate greatness. Sorry man.
Hamed retires with a deflated ego and serious hand problems. Without the injuries to his hand he may have continued, but the fight after Barrera made him realise he had no future in the ring.
Naz VANQUISHED these world class featherweights, often in just a few rounds. Barrera was the only fighter who gave him real trouble. Firstly there is no shame in this; Barrera is an ATG HOFer. However most people don't know about the problems Naz had leading up to the fight. His heart was not in it, he was not focused, and on the day of the fight there were many signs that Naz realised he was not prepared. He kept complaining about handwraps, he didn't even do his trademark flip over the ropes. Naz was past prime, and it the fight wasn't a shutout anyway.
