    Ike Quartey passes away

Ike Quartey passed away today. No details about how he died have been released yet. Quartey was one of the best welterweights of the mid to late 90's in one of, in my opinion, the top 5 welterweight weight era's. Quartey really never got his due being overshadowed by Oscar DeLaHoya, Felix Trinidad and Pernel Whitaker during that time, but was an excellent fighter with outstanding jab. Rest in peace champ!

Shame, really good fighter he was.

    I thought he edged Oscar.

Apparently the article I read is wrong. Turns out it's Ike's older brother who passed away. Clement "Ike" Quartey was the first Olympic medalist from Ghana winning silver in 1960. This was the article I read. I've since looked into more articles that confirm it was Ikes older brother.

There were several news reports that named the wrong brother, as well as a couple YouTube videos doing the same thing.

          Rest in peace Clement Quartey.

A relief that Ike is still alive, but still a shame about his brother.....

He did. Looks like we're in the minority about this.

I have somewhere an American mag-a-zine - perhaps KO, or Boxing 99, I can't remember - containing an article written several months after the fight, which rescored it round by round, shamelessly twisting the reality of facts in favor of Oscar, thus justifying his dubious decision win. There had been some debate about the latter at the time, but I noticed a pro-De La Hoya consensus as the years passed. To this day I believe he didn't win that fight.

This article you linked is hilarious, if you read carefully it mixes the two persons.

Relieved that Bazooka is still alive. I was an admirer of him.

All is well that ends well... This thread can easily turn into a retrospective on the "Bazooka." I well remember the build up to the De La Hoya fight, I do not remember, as Iron Dan has remembered, whom I thought edged it... I do remember the fight was kind of anticlimatic. I also remember watching it as a Messican bar in the Mission hood in San Francisco where I was working as a Real Estate Appraiser.

Ike was solid, a strong puncher with great instincts. As said, he was overshadowed by some of the kings that reigned at that time but still managed to carve out a respectable place. HOF worthy? For those who care?

I'd have to watch it again, but I had Oscar edging it when I watched. Lol, I was also watching in a bar many years ago called Charlie O's in Narragansett RI. I could probably remember where I was at for every major fight I've ever watched live, but don't remember where I ate lunch 2 Saturday's ago. Weird how that works.
