It would be a bit uncouth if Matt wrote anything about how great his book is so I figured I should do this for him.
I did not get The Irish Champion for free and of course I have not been paid or approached in anyway to write anything about it. This is totally unsolicited. ... Also, I am no author so it should be pretty clear I'm just a guy telling you about a book I read, not a shill, plant, or any other noun of that sort.
The amount of detail Matt puts in his writing is ridiculous and nearly Tolkienian in scope. You're going to learn all about Peter and in the endeavor to fully explain Peter, Matt will also teach you all about a whole host of characters. You will come away with a fairly strong understanding of the time period in general. Everyone who was a top guy during Maher's time, absolutely everyone Peter ever fought, the boxing public as a whole be it fans or money men, politics, atmosphere, everything. If he knows the color of colors worn he's going to explain it.
On top of this, the book is a great resource like a school text-book. Records, little insights, easy to navigate, it is fantastic.
This level of detail doesn't come easy and should be supported. I have some Pollacks, Smith's caramel colored kings, and Shelton's 1722-1888. All good books, all good authors, but for my money Matt's the king of the old ring. I'm not just saying that because he posts here, you owe it to yourself to buy this book. Give it a read.
