    Louis' Physical DeclineAfter WW2

Reading Randy Roberts bio on Louis he recounts that Louis' personal physician,Dr R Bennett ,playing table tennis with Joe , noticed that he reacted slower to a ball hit to one side than the other.Conducted further tests revealed evidence of "reflexive deterioration".Bennett informed Joe's new manager Marshall Miles "Joe is through". Marshall loved Louis and advised him to retire.
Joe fought Walcott and afterwards told his manager,"I didn't feel like myself."

Age. He didn't do much except box exhibitions and make training films while stationed in Hawaii.

By the time he was in uniform in spring of 1942 he already had eight years and 50 plus fights under his belt.

It's possible, had there been no war he may have faded faster; he was already showing signs of slowing down by '41 and then he lost Blackburn in '42. I could seeing him fighting a few more defenses in '43 and '44 and then possibly hanging them up.

Then again since he hadn't paid his taxes since the Schmeling fight in '38 it's possible he wasn't going anywhere for a while, war or no war.

        - - Joe was flying in dangerous warzones as much as he was in Hawaii.

He mentored the Robinson twins, Jackie and Sugar Ray and was instrumental in keeping them out of the brig, and they weren't all lounging under palm trees ogling swiveling native women while sipping gin and tonics out of pineapples together. Don't think any of them saw a moment of battle though if attacked they were at least trained in battle basics.

The guy who spent the entirety of WW2 in Hawaii was Joe Dimaggio who actually got fat while there.

In Randy Roberts bio of Louis he says
Dimaggio was constantly complaining about the conditions and contrasts that with Louis' quiet acceptance of things.

Ray Robinson never left the US he mysteriously said he fell down some stairs and was found wandering with no recollection of things claiming to be suffering from Amnesia,.
After the war Robinson asked writer Bill Heinz to ghost his autobiography.Heinz aware of this "episode" in Rays life declined.

Neither Roberts or I can speak directly to the medical implications, but despite Joe's 1950-51 run being loaded with rather good names, I sure wish he had retired after smoking Walcott and was able to stay put.

I'm sure Rocky does too, as word has it he never wanted to face him.

Talk about missing the point entirely! Louis said the last fight he had in which he felt like his real self was against Tami Mauriello.

You dont think Louis was in physical decline after WW2?
Well he did and so did his Doctor!
