    Old Time Australasian Heavyweights

Can anyone tell me why early Australasian heavyweights like Jack Howard, George Stirling, Big Bill Turner, and Colin Bell had such checkered careers? Some of these guys had the physical equipment to be successful in the ring but seemed to lack some critical element. Win one or two then lose one then win another, rarely going on a winning streak. Was it poor conditioning, lack of good training, absence of ambition?

Maybe they were just trading wins; like Harness Racing drivers, they take turns winning.

Well it seems like the late 1800's Australians, really, really old timers like Peter Jackson, Frank Slavin and Joe Goddard were a pretty good lot. Especially Jackson.
