First off, Louis was a great fighter...for his era!!! The heavyweights of the 40's and 50's did not compare to the heavyweights of the 60's and 70's.

If Louis fought Floyd Patterson, he would have a pretty good chance, but it wouldn't be an easy fight to predict. Louis had trouble with fast punching, and quick moving fighters. Patterson was really the first "fast" heavyweight. Basically it would be a comparable fight to the Louis Conn fight, only Patterson was faster, and hit harder. As long as Patterson could keep from being intimidated by Louis, it would be a very good fight.

Louis vs Sonny Liston would be almost a shut out. LIston had many things that Louis did not. He had a very durable chin (minus Liston - Ali 2), he had an extremely long reach, he was heavier than Louis although roughly the same height, his jab alone would give Joe problems, and for a big guy he had very good footwork. His boxing skills were on par with Louis, and he was very heavy handed. I see this fight ending with a knock out victory for Liston.

Now Louis vs. Fraizer would be a great fight. Fraizer had a will of iron, but had trouble with some fighters that seemed a bit odd for somebody of his level. Such as Bonevena. Anyway, Fraizer relied only on offense, his best block was by using his face. He wore Ali down with his relentless pressure in their first fight, and of course his wrecking ball left hook. Louis, a great combination puncher would have no problem teeing off on Fraizer with more power than Ali, and probably end the fight the way the "Thrilla" ended, with Fraizer on his feet, but his face too swollen to continue probably sooner than Ali TKO'd him. Also, Fraizer was at his best when he was angry and Louis wouldn't have talked enough trash to piss Fraizer off.

Louis vs. Spinks would be a dull fight with Spinks running and Louis cutting the ring off. Easy...Louis by KO or UD.

Louis vs. Foreman would be a shorter version of Louis vs. Liston only with Foreman doing to Louis what he did to Fraizer and Norton, KO by 2.

Louis vs. Norton would probably end in a decision win for Louis, Norton had an awkward fighting style but Louis' tried and true "by the book" method would eventually get him the victory.

And finally Louis vs. Holmes. If Louis could some how manage to get near Holmes i.e. past his jab, then he would have a pretty good chance. Holmes had the more durable chin, but Louis had more power. Holmes had better footwork, but Louis had better fundamentals. It would be an ugly fight but I could see this one going to either Holmes by KO basically wearing Louis down with a bombardment of jabs that would either swell his face, which he was prone too, or just drop him. Or, if Louis could get past the jab, then I could see Louis winning this by late stoppage or UD.

    but that's my opinion....

Louis would probably beat any Ali opponent, some of them easier than Ali did, and some of them having more trouble.

Louis v. Foreman - Louis is faster, a better boxer, and has good enough defense and stamina to chop down Foreman. Foreman would give him a good fight, but he eventually stops foreman anywhere form 8-15.

Louis v. Frazier - this doesn't go too well for Frazier. Louis is a quick starter when he wants to be and if he starts quick, Frazier will be in a lot of trouble. I predict a Louis ko within 7 rounds. If it goes past 9 or 10 rounds, then Frazier might win or drop a decision to Joe, but I think Joe wins here, similar to the way Foreman did.

Louis v. Norton - Norton has absolutely no chance here. Louis toys with Kenny and stops him within three rounds tops. Norton has nothing really to trouble Louis, and his punching power is not good enough to have a real punchers chance, nor his chin good enough to withstand Louis' shots.

Louis v Patterson - Louis will have great trouble with the speedy Patterosn. He will have to pace himself and pick his uppercuts carefully, or he will be in for a long night. I'd say he would catch him in the mid round, but until then Patterson boxes beautifully around Louis.
I think Louis would have had big trouble with Frazier, Foreman and Holmes. Quarry, Shavers, Patterson and Liston would have given him very tough fights as well.
That's the way I see it as well.

            vs. Liston
-Liston would be a very bad matchup for the offense minded Louis. Liston was excellent at fading away from attacks while blasting his opponent with his long range power punching and monster jab. Louis might get a few licks in and he was more durable than Floyd but I think Liston still gets the stoppage. Ali had to simply run for his life to survive and Louis doesn't have the legs for that.

Patterson with nowhere to go against Liston.

            vs. Frazier
-Toss up. Crowding fighters gave Louis trouble but his fast accurate power punching might be too much for Frazier in the early rounds. Forced to predict I'd say Louis stops him early.

Foreman crushes Frazier with his big jab and uppercut, weapons Louis weren't unfamiliar with.

            vs. Norton

            - Norton couldn't handle big elite punchers, Louis overwhelms him early. Norton was more at home pressuring fighters like Young, Ali, and Holmes.

Louis at his most vicious in the Schemling rematch.

            vs. Foreman

-Louis was very comfortable chopping down big slow brawlers with his deceptively solid defense and quick hard counter punching. Foreman is the best of his kind and I could see him scoring a KD or even two, but I still really like Louis by mid round stoppage.

All tough fights Id have Louis Ko'ing Patterson and Spinks, Stopping Frazier after getting hurt himself in an excellent bout, Getting the nod over the distance against Liston in a close fought fight where either man could go and getting stopped by a rampaging Foreman.

On the Foreman loss i wouldnt be surprised if Joe pulled a KO win out the bag tho, George made alot of mistakes and threw his crude swinging (tho devastating) shots wide, Louis could step in with his leathal close range combo's and end it. Foremans chin got better with age and bulk in my opinion.

Joe Louis is my second favourite fighter of all time preceeded only by Iron Mike Tyson.
