Mike Tyson Vs Ray Mercer

I saw some1 mention it in another thread, and thought id see peoples opinions on it.

Although Mercer had a great chin, i think he was a to one dimensional and would of found it hard to hit tyson with his peak-aboo style. I see him sticking around for a while but getting TKOd in the 6th or 7th

Lewis didn't stop Mercer, Holyifeld didn't stop Mercer, Holmes didn't stop Mercer, Morrison didn't stop Mercer, Witherspoon didn't stop Mercer ect. It took Mercer to be years past his prime to be stopped by Wladimir Klitschko and i would have favored peak Mercer over him. Mercer was also standing up at the time of the stoppage. Mercer had one of the best chins in the sport and you can make a case that Morrison punches as hard or even harder than Tyson.

I see Mercer being able to outlast Tyson in this match up. Once Tyson finds out that he has a guy in front of him that will not be knocked out and is actually pushing him back and landing power punches, then he will mentally fall apart. Skill wise, Tyson is more talented and if he had shown me in the past that he can be in a tough fight, then i would have chosen him but unfortunately, that never happened. Mercer is just too tough. 3 or 4 rounds, Tyson would fall apart and get tired and discouraged and i see Mercer wearing him down and stopping him late. Match Tyson with a guy who has a weak chin and is a pure boxer, then he will look his best. Ray Mercer by late stoppage.

tyson by KO. i see mercer hanging around for awhile and making a fight out of it, but a prime tyson definately knocks him out.

Ruddock was never champion but was a good fighter. He was the kind of fighters that puts up good effort but always came up short in his biggest fights. He was not close to being on the level of peak Ray Mercer.

Tucker was a paper champion and got his hands on a paper belt. He has never impressed me or shown that he was ever an elite fighter. Not in Mercer's league either. Tucker was a pure boxer, Mercer was a come forward boxer/puncher that had a cast iron chin. His style is all wrong for Tyson. Tyson liked to be the bully and Mercer wouldn't allow that to happen. Tyson liked his opponents grabbing and moving and Ray is actually bigger then Tyson. He would offset Tyson's game by pushing him back and discouraging him. Douglas, Ruddock, Holyifeld ect all push Tyson back and he didn't look impressive at all.

Mercer was a very good fighter tough, powerful, strong willed and could never be taken lightly by any of the greats. He fought to a close fight with peak Lewis and Evander Holyfield. He beat Morrison who later became champion and a good name around boxing.

This fight would be similar to Tua/Ibeabuchi while it lasted, but with Mercer overcoming Tyson and getting him out in the late rounds. Great fight, but Mercer has too much in the chin, power and will department for any Tyson to handle. I recall Smith staggering Tyson with an uppercut in their fight. (correct me if i am wrong)

Your talking about how Tucker was nothing but a paper champion and your forgeting Mercer was just that WBO?? Title for something like 9 months. Then you go on to say morrison later became a champion i really dnt know and couldnt care less what boxing comitee gave him the championship but it sure as hell isnt a half decent one. And with his glass chin he wouldnt last against tyson. Just thought id say this, as your being hypocritical by talking down paper champions wen the person your backing is nothing but a paper champion and a WBO one at that

Throughout all the people that i talk to in person about Tyson, all of the dozens of boxing sites that i go to with the biggest Tyson fanatics, on any forum you are one of the few that would actually pick Tyson over George Foreman, when even his trainer himself said that he wouldn't match Tyson against George is he were in that era.

After watching grandad Holmes pick apart a peak Mercer I have no doubt what Tyson at his best would do.

I certainly dont rate Mercer higher than a prime Tucker, I think he was undefeated when he faced Tyson and certainly did quite well. the reason I cited Ruddock was because he gave a slightly faded post Buster Douglas Tyson two good fights.....I'd favour Mercer over Ruddock in a decision here, but only just!

Ruddock was rated number three in the world for a year or two, I cant think Mercer ever held that accolade although he was a WBO champ........and not for very long at that! He was always rated below the Tysons, Bowes, Holyfields and even Foreman in the early 90s and rightly so. A good fighter but no legend!
