I'm a huge Ezzard Charles fan and I enjoyed your write up. However I would like to point out a single mistake which is actually a rather common misconception considering how mythical the fight has become:
"Ezzard was ahead and had severely cut Rocky's nose, which put the bout in danger of being stopped, when he was KO'd in the 8th."
Ezzard wasn't ahead on points. All three judges only awarded him the first round. He started much more aggressive than in the first fight, throwing lots of jabs, body punches, and even catching Marciano with a few excellent right hands. However in the second round Marciano badly hurt him with a right over the top, he went down a few moments later and I'm not sure ever really fully recovered.
The fight footage picks up in the 5th with an unmarked Marciano battering a very lumpy eyed Charles, who is still scoring with a few good counters but is mostly clinching and hanging on. There was lots of wrestling in the sixth and Marciano's nose got sliced in half by an accidental elbow though a couple uppercuts got through too. Charles had trouble landing in the 7th and ended the round rocked by a clubbing right over the top.
The 8th is of course history. Its still a very dramatic hard fought fight but it wasn't really as competitive as the myth makes it out to be nor was Charles winning.
