It's still a compelling statement, nonetheless. We should break down the "best" year for each great champion.
    That'd be fun.

Random question, which may deserve it's own thread:

Joe Frazier got clobbered by George Foreman when they were both in their respective primes (though Joe was starting on the downside). Since it took Frazier awhile to get warmed up in a fight, he usually stepped-up his work rate in the 4th round or so. George Foreman, meanwhile, in his early career, used a lot of energy in the first few rounds, and then tired later on. Is it possible then, had Joe avoided coming straight forward at first, that Frazier could have taken Foreman down? If Joe would have been a little more elusive, allowing Foreman to spend a little energy missing him, could he have gotten warmed up and really started delivering?

I always wondered this, as it seemed more like a lack of fighter-specific preparadness to me than simply a bad matchup. Joe was way passed his prime when they fought the second time, so I'm just talking about them at their best.

Joe Frazier told me that Foreman just had the style and power to beat him. He said that if they fought several more times, the same thing would happen.

It was ALI and not BRUCE LEE who invented (or at least made popular) the ONE INCH PUNCH when he put SONNY LISTON down and out. Some of this stuff aint gonna never find its way to boxers of today. It's too hi-tech....Such as the 1-inch punch. Blackburn trained JOE LOUIS in those INCH PUNCHES too. Contrary to popular belief, MUHAMMAD ALI hit hard too. It was all in the hand speed and velocity. See most boxers try to load up too much with their punches or force them. Not Ali. The Jab was meant to flick, punish and cut ya up....I could go on with a lot of stuff. But as coaches, fighters and what not we've really got to start studying the SPIRIT of fighters who have gone on before us if we're gonna start producing other all time great champion boxers.

** Actually that was YOU that made up that punch.

We all know the punch Ali put Liston down with was a flashing right hand off his retreating back feet that traveled at least 2 foot or more.

Ali later claimed the punch he used was the "Anchor Punch" taught to him by Stepin Fetchit who in turned was supposed to have been taught by Jack Johnson who one can surmise was taught by some local voodoo daddy or cathouse bouncer.

Personally, I prefer a cold beer in my right hand as I flick any offenders with my left pinky. I originated that technique and it has served me well since I have studied up and you have obviously not!
