    Rocky Marciano

On this day (June 17) Rocky Marciano defeated Ezzard Charles to retain his title. In honor of this anniversary (however small it is) I think I'll start an all Rocky Marciano thread. My main question is how good was he actually. In my opinion he doesn't get enough credit. Many think he was a strong idiot with little talent. I completely disagree. I'm opening up the thread to anything related to the Rock. Comparisons, thoughts, whatever. Enjoy and believe me if you bust on the Rock I'll call you out. LOL

    Yeah?

Why ask for an honest answer as to how good he was then if you're not prepared for differing and sometimes negative opinions that aren't in alignment with your own?

But to answer your question, he was always as good as he had to be in his time to be most successful, and you can't expect more from a fighter than that.

Great fighter with underrated opponents and in most people's top 5 greatest heavyweights. Underrated defense, amazing power, stamina, and a great chin and heart that have helped get him through every opponent he faced in the professional ring. A truly great fighter.

Rocky Marciano is THE only legit retired "undefeated" fighter. That is cause he had to. Though his mind, heart and soul wanted to continue, the body just couldn't take no more, and doctors told him that.

Floyd Mayweather retiring in his prime, and not taking on the absolute best (WW), is more damaging to his legacy than he'll ever know. Marciano took shots from men well over 200lbs. Who has ever put a hurting on Floyd? No one.

No he's not, as there's been plenty of fighters who've retired with an undefeated record, including more than a few champions/title holders in history who never once tasted defeat. Heck, Marciano isn't even the only heavyweight champion in history to retire (and stay retired) undefeated if including the bareknuckle era and Hen Pearce, which considering the bareknuckle era covered such a significant span of boxing history I don't see why you wouldn't.

I also have Marciano's bio by Skeehan, as well as other references from back then surrounding his retirement, so I'm well aware of the reasons and the history behind those reasons in regards to why he retired. But thanks anyway.

Leave Floyd Mayweather out of this thread, or it is all this thread will end up talking about.

I don't know if you can compare bareknuckle boxers to modern day boxers though. It's a very different sport. I think he is the only legit retireds undefeated fighter. The man beat all the greats of his time. He was in a word great. He took em and he threw em much better than most. I don't think he can be compared to anyone. He was one of a kind.

The second fight Charles almost got a stoppage so he couldn't have been doing that badly at the time. Yes he was old but so was Marciano. It was Rocky's 4th to last and 3rd to last fights of his career. If they were both in their primes Rocky would have killed Charles. Bottom line is Rocky Marciano was a better fighter than Ezzard Charles ever was.
