Indeed, Mankiller Jess would hold a belt today, but in 6 oz gloves in his day he was a killer of men.

Jack had to sign a waiver so his estate couldnt sue Jess if Jack died.

Only fight I know of with those circumstances.
Do you think that was real or a Tex Rickard PR stunt? -- They do say Willard had a very high opinion of himself, so maybe he did actually insist on a wavier. Oh the irony! -- But I never like to trust Rickard on anything.

      - -As I recall, big Jess in his short career had 2 deaths on his record.

That grueling KO of JJ looked as near death as it comes.

Over and above everything else Dempsey had the will to win that earmarks an ATG fighter. Beat him up, knock him down, cut him, make him bleed from his ears and he is still coming at you at full intensity looking to kill you. Add to this his speed, punching power and short arm punching.

If you read the reports of his bout with Sharkey that took place at the old Yankee Stadium. That stadium shook when Dempsey put over the ko blow and he was given an ovation at a magnitude never heard prior. Gives one the sense of just how much a thrill it was to watch Dempsey fight.

              - - Let's be clear and distinct>

Dempsey fights were popular, not Jack who was considered an uncouth draft dodger until the Tunney long count where the American public finally saw him in his finest hour.
