I got this information that the tape of Hagler's loss to willie monroe no longer exists, it says it was a stormy night in philadelphia that the bout wasnt televised??? dont really know if it was filmed or was the tape lost??? based on some of Hagler's interview, its certain there's no controversy surrounding his 2nd defeat unlike his loss to Leonard.

I've obviously never seen the fight, but I read in Bert Sugar's book that those who have called it a bit of a "hometown decision".So who knows?Either way Hagler knocked his ass out in the rematch.

Don't know for sure cause I've never seen the fight, but I guess it's worth noting that Hagler was reported to have bronchitis when he entered the ring on that night against Monroe, and that illness may have took something out of Hagler's performance in that fight.

This is an interesting post. By the way, I would like to have the Leonard/Hagler fight if anybody has it.
I have Hagler/Monroe III, but not much else of the Marvellous One.

Hagler beat two all time greats and 8 good fighters, he will always remain top 3 at middleweight with monzon and greb.

- -Marv like most all greats started off as a work in progress.
No shame back then taking a hard knocks loss. Regrettably that ain't the case today.

If that were today, Hagler would be called a bum for losing to Monroe. He'd be mocked by the casuals and dismissed as a hype job. How far the sport and it's fans have fallen in just a few short decades.

At some level Hager did get punished for losing to Bobby Watts and Willie Monroe in '76.
Monroe was ranked 5th in '75 and Watts 4th in '76 -- the (almost) back to back loses to Watts and Monroe kept Hagler out of The Ring top ten MW for '76.
A year later (77) Hagler is moved to the #1 spot with Monzon's retirement.
MAYBE had he won those fights in '76 he would have been ranked and given a shot at Monzon in '77. It would have been better than the Valdez rematch.

Nobody was in a rush to call Hagler an all-time great back then until he actually earned it.
I miss that mentality.
