    Aunt Jemima is Dead

    Aunt Jemima’s new name, Pearl Milling Company, is getting battered online for sounding like an unappetizing “gravel mining company” or “a James Bond villain.”

    The unsavory reviews are pouring in from Twitter, with some breakfast buffs threatening to switch to Pearl Milling’s competitors, Mrs. Butterworth’s or Log Cabin, over the revamp.

    “I think it sounds like a gravel mining company,” lawyer Michelle Rozovics wrote.

    Another said Pearl Milling Company sounded like “something owned by a James Bond Villain.”

    Meanwhile, one critic noted, “Pearl Milling Company? Sounds like a generic house brand for Dollar General.”

    Good. It's about time they got rid of that racist ass name.

    If anyone has a problem with the name change screw them. Don't eat it and go eat something else. You can starve to death for all I care.

      It was a racist name.

      Lots of racism in simple old household products.

      That said, it’s not good to erase history from ourselves.

          Sad day when people are so damn uptight a pancake syrup makes any impact at all. How could anyone be so damn tiny as to worry about something that petty?

          Reggae, soul, funk, R&B, blues, rap, hip hop is black while rockabilly, country, bluegrass, punk, grunge, heavy medal is white......so what.

          Grambling, Jackson State, Howard, Morgan State, Hampton, Texas Southern, Bethune Cookman and another 50 or so schools fall into that Historically Black Colleges and Universities category, so what.

          What is the big deal about anything where race is taken into consideration? We have EBONY and JET magazine, hair gel for black hair, BET TV, movies by blacks for blacks, MOTOWN.

          Then there is Nashville, Hee Haw, The Grand Old Opry, so what.

          My neighbor across the street is a Mexican, they listen to Mexican music, they bring us Mexican food over once in awhile, and it is great. They don't listen to black or white music, why would they?

          So we all need to be alike? We can't have an Aunt Jemima, why not?




          Black schools, BET, black magazines, black music is cool, but can't have Aunt Jemima?

            Nooo. I want Aunt Jemima back.

            Why don't they just introduce a little black kid in the picture with her and we can all pretend it's really his aunt, Jemima.

            Or why couldn't they just rename this shlt, Ms. Jemima? Mrs. Jones..? Mrs. Johnson's? I'm disappointed in this resolution.

            How about Mademoiselle Jemima? That would have thrown us all off enough. FFS.



            They should have done something to honor the character that represented for that long. Just modernize it. Oh well. I haven't had this stuff since I was a kid. I only mess with the real maple nowadays.
