The second question you raise is a really good one. Both the left and the right love to accuse the other 'side' of being authoritarian. Of course they are both correct, yet in totally different ways.
The right claims to love small government, but they love force - which is achieved through government. So conservative governments just shuffle the deckchairs. They reduce public services which appear to be in any way charitable or helpful, and increase those which appear tough - like the military or anything to do with border control or security.

Once you start to view things in terms of 'sides' of politics and choose one to identify with - you are no longer an ethical or rational human being, and you are now part of the problem.
