As a Cuban who lived 10 years under his reign i can say that i'm glad that i left that poor island when i was still young, his policies have ruined many lives which explained why so many are in foreign countries.

Now i'm not going to bash the man because i never knew him in person or anything, but he was a very bright leader. One of the few leaders who understood this country (USA) and how it works. Not many are like that today.

After the collapse of the communist countries in the late 80's and early 90's he managed to keep his island together...although with severe reduction of food and items for survival and without the help of any country.

Stuck between two of the biggest world powers at the height of the cold war. Devastating economic fall after the collapse of the Soviet Union and hard sanctions by the US, and still the island nation continued on despite the massive disadvantages, often as a result of the struggle of the people. He outlasted 11 US presidents, numerous assassination plots. Fascinating life. Loved and hated.

I agree...I can't help but admire his strength. Cubans are educated people and have decent health care. Cubans invented a vaccine for lung cancer...CimaVax.

Not saying Bautista perfect, but people weren't fleeing on rafts thru shark infested waters... They had a booming economy... Not a perfect place, but what is... At least no one was willing to risk their lives fleeing

A complete different country. Before Castro and his revolutionaries took over the capital Havana was in the #4 spot behind London, NYC and Paris in capital of the world.

All corrupt and all run by the mafia. People like Castro don't just come into power out of nowhere, the people were unhappy with their living conditions under Batista. There was a huge gap between the rich and the poor and the economy wasn't growing.
