Coroners officials have identified a Beaumont man who was shot and killed at a Yucca Valley mall Thursday, before the gunman led police on a chase to San Bernardino and injured a CHP officer.
Obette Reyes Lacap, 33, was found dead in his car at the parking lot of the Town Center Mall on the Twentynine Palms Highway, shortly after 11:30 a.m.
Sheriffs deputies received a report of two men in a silver Chevy Malibu leaving the scene and began a pursuit down Highway 62 and onto westbound Interstate 10.
Sheriffs deputies and California Highway Patrol officers followed the car through Banning, Yucaipa and Redlands until the driver exited off Waterman at Hospitality Avenue.
The driver was cornered in a business park on Carnegie Drive where he crashed into an embankment and light post. At least one of the man got out of the car and opened fire.
A CHP officer suffered a minor gunshot wound to the leg and was expected to recover. Multiple officers returned fire, killing one man and injuring the other man.
Neither suspect has been identified.
Pretty crazy. I've been through all those areas. Yucca Valley doesn't get that much excitement, so I'm sure the whole town is talking about it.
